can't see music folder on ios
Posted by: Arnout on 12 January 2019
Good afternoon , i am a newbee from Holland.
happy with my new nac 272 nap 250dr combination .
Little problem: the nac is connected to a synology ds213 with a utp cable. On my device(NAC) i can select a number or an album stored on my nas . Unfortunatedly i can't see this on my iphone/ipad app. When a number is playing, i can however pause the number or play the next number with my ios.
Anyone can solve this problem?
greeting Arnout
If I understand it, your nas is connected to your N272 directly, and not through your home network. That's the problem. You need to connect everything to your home network, which is typically done by connecting everything to the router that your internet service provider supplies, or, better, through a small (8-port) ethernet unmanaged switch.
So connect the switch to the router, and then the nas to the switch and the N272 to the switch. Then the Naim App via wifi will see everything (if the nas is set up properly).
This is how these devices are meant to be set up.
thanks for you're reply.
my nac is connected to the switch , and the swich is connected with my router. The nas is seperatedly connected to my router (both in the electricity meter cupboard ). isn't this practically the same ?

Can you give more info .... what UPnP media server software are you using on the Synology ? Syenology's own Media Server or the 3rd party Minimserver+Java.
What other software packages do you have install & running on the Synology

Not really, it means the streaming path from NAS is via the routers switch-set, then via the separate switch & on to the 272. Ideally it should all be centred on the switch or forget the switch & centre it all on the router
i am using the synology media server , and i think the standard software packages

OK, but standard software doesn't mean anything, so on your PC/Mac/Laptop Synology "Package Centre" installed view you have Media Server, plus File Station & Search (both you cannot uninstall), but what else please.
i'm having problems attaching a picture here. how can I do this?

Its not difficult, but you need a web photo service first - I use Imgur. But rather than waste time on that, we can do it later, just list the names of the installed packages.
photo station, media server, download station, php 5,6 , php 7,0 , audiostation , python, file station hyperbackup, word processor, webdavserver, cloud station sharesync, hyper backup vault, backup analyzer, apache http 2.2 , USB copy, Oauth service, universal search, cloud station server,
web station, video station, mariaDB5, itunes server, init 3rdparty
OK, most of all that you have loaded I don't have a clue what they do or why you need them. Apart from loading the limited RAM of your DS213, I suspect one or another is interfering with your Media Server function. I would first uninstall (stop running) everything except Media Server (& Search & File Station that cannot be uninstalled) & see how that works, then we can start again with a clean sheet to diagnose .
Hmm... this is getting kinda complicated!
Can you see the 272 via the Naim app on your phone (eg to select input, choose iRadio stations, or whatever)? If so, then your phone is at least on the same network as your 272... but if not, double check that your phone isn’t accidentally on your “guest” wifi network (which happens sometimes).
The network topology you have (using two switches) is logically equivalent to moving the NAS from the switch on the router to the switch where your 272 connects, so that wouldn’t be my first troubleshooting concern... especially as you can select tracks on the NAS via the 272 remote (but not the Naim app on your phone), which tells us these two bits of hardware are on the same network.
That said, are you selecting UPNP as the input (via remote) on the 272 and then selecting the NAS as your streaming server? If so, great ... if not, then it might be worth understanding what you’re doing instead, as there might not be an app equivalent method. For example, and I realize this is probably not what you’re doing, but if you used the NAS DSPlay app to “push” music to your amplifier then that would never be visible within the Naim app.

edit ps: Although simplifying what’s running on your NAS might help, I don’t think this is at the heart of the problem; I ran a ton of stuff, including most of what you list plus MinimServer, on a DS213+ without issue... it feel more like a connectivity issue, or possibly a misinterpretation of how you would select things via the app, than a switch hardware or NAS issue to me, with all respect to Mike-B of course!
Ah, I see you can pause a track via your iPhone... so skip the whole “guest wifi network” aspect of my post... sorry!

All I'm trying to do is simplify things: goodness knows why &/or what is running on the NAS, & why route the data via two switch sets, most likely not the problem, but why. Lets get back to simple basics & we might get this fixed
i stopped/removed most of the programs on de nas
connection :
naim------switch-----------------------------------------router---synology NAS
Good work. And what do you see? Can you use the Naim app and select UPNP as the input from the 272 home screen? Do you see a server with a name obviously derived from your Synology NAS’ name? Can you drill down in that to get to Music then Albums or Artist or whatever?
Regards alan
when i open the naim app i select UPnP, then i see the logo of the diskstion, pressing on this it starts searching en finds nothing, not even after half an hour.
Ok great... have you set up the DiscStation music server to find the music files on your NAS? That is done via the web interface, and includes the options to specify the music directory, etc.
Hi Arnout, did you already try to reinstall media server on your Synology? .
If you see the blue Synology logo as in this picture, that is the Media Server logo (its not the disc station)
It should open up with no delay, so if it doesn't it means something has not been set up correctly. You need to go back to the Synology DSM on your computer & check, & thats something only you can do. Maybe running the set up disc again will correct whatever is wrong.
yes i have setup the diskstation,
I am reading some other(synology) forums and i was wundering if the problem has anything to do with de setting MIME types?
Last week I have exchanged one of the hard drives in my Nas (bad sectors occurred ) . After that operation cover arts in naim app weren’t available any more, reinstalling the media server solved the problem.

In the DSM web page, you can open Control Panel -> Applications -> Indexing Service. You will see Media Indexing, with a button for Indexed Folder. Choose this, and you can verify where it looks for your media; by default, music lives in the /music folder in your main root directory on your primary volume... if you have your files there, try re-indexing but if you don’t, then either edit the music index or create a new one (eg flac or mp3 or whatever), select the top level directory, tell it to index music files, then back on the main media indexing page, press re-index. The status should show “Indexing media files...” and, however long later (depending on the number of files, probably dominated by your photos) it will be finished and running. In fact, in the Naim app you should see your indexed music files even before it finishes re-Indexing your photos... I just tried that as a little experiment.
Let us know how that works before doing anything drastic.

unbelievable , after 10 or more hours of searching and reading the solution was simple: remove and install mediaserver.
Thanks everybody for helping
