nStream problem

Posted by: Steeve on 10 September 2011

Hi

I have just installed a new Virgin Superhub all-in-one modem/router/WAP. Previously I was using a separate NTL modem/ Netgear router/ Netgear switch/ Dlink WAP. The new Superhub is in the same position as my previous WAP was. Due mainly to the fact that that my existing ethernet cable from my NDX was not long enough to reach the Superhub position, I have left the Netgear switch in place and have kept both the NDX and my NAS connected to it and have connected the Superhub to it with another Cat5e cable.

Everything works fine. I can stream radio from the internet and I can see the NAS on my NDX and play the files. However, I'm buggered if I can get the nStream app to work now.

My iTouch connects to the Superhub with no problem. I've tried switching the NDX, iTouch and Superhub off and on several times, but still no joy.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Steeve

Almost certainly a router issue, try fixing the ip address of the NDX in the NDX and the router.

Aha!! To be honest, I didn't fully understand what you meant at first, but managed to find the IP Address of the NDX on the Superhub web page and on the NDX and sure enough they are different.

I actually took auto-connection off on the nStream app and changed the IP address in there, and all is now good.

Many thanks Rich. I have learned something new today!

Hi,

while testing the ND5 XS I find out that, by using Foobat nstream doesn't show the correct sample informations obout the recording. File format wrong (WAV instead FLAC), wrong sample rate and bit rate.

A nstream issue or due to Foobar?

Ragman, thev 'file'  type displayed is actually the mime type of the media. This is sent to the ND5 by the upnp player, Foobar, in your case. That's where I would start to look for the guilty party.

Nstream as said before is  benign here, it's like a web browser, it can only display what is sent to it.

Check your library settings in foobar. I would bet that foobar is monitoring some old, deleted file versions and serving them to the ND5.

Are you sure Foobar is not set to transcode? I store in FLAC but transcode to WAV when streaming so my SU shows WAV when playing. This is a good thing!

Pev, well in this case it appears Foobar is sending the correct Mine type. To be honest I think it would always  need to be or the down stream renderer won't know what to do!

We should remember file types are not streamed, it's the encoded audio data identified by its Mime that's sent by the upnp server.

Does it make a difference?

Without restarting the format wars  yes - I can, with my ears on my system, hear a very slight difference between WAV and FLAC. When I set the UPNP server to transcode (one click and it's set forever), my files stored in FLAC but transcoded to WAV sound indistinguishable (to me) from native WAV.

Emphasis on very slight!
