UnitiQute having 16bit inputs only?

Posted by: mige0 on 18 September 2011

Hi

Wonder if the analog and digital inputs (not streaming !) of the UnitiQute are restricted to 44/16 - or - if they are capable to do 24/96 too ?
Could not find that in the specs.

From mere listening both seem to be 16/44 only. Any tricks to apply or firmware update to do ?

Michael,

the s/pdif digital inputs are 24bit/192kHz capable, however the USB input and streamer are limited to 24bit/96kHz.

The Naim website gives you more detail here:

Ok thanks Richard for pointing me there.

Regarding the SPDIF „capability“ I made the observation that routing an analog source from my ADC to the UnitiCute via SPDIF and then to the DAC via SPDIF too, does not work all that well.

Given that 96k streamed audio does work fine now and also given that the digital signal path is using the same SPDIF line to my DAC and also given that the ADC / DAC is locked to the UnitiCute clock anyway – that auditioning result appears a little bit strange to me.

All in all and compared to the direct routing via DSP from ADC to DAC, the sound looses considerably in resolution and flow and also becomes strained, limited in BW, slightly sharp, and overall appears less lifelike and open.

Pretty much the same result if I use the analog IN of the UnitiCute.

I would have preferred routing via UnitiCute instead of direct DSP routing out of convenience, simply for being able to select sources via the NAIM remote control.

Are there any clues what ADC unit is in use?

Ahh - no ADC for the line IN

Strange - the tuner does have ADC !?!

Have a look at section 4.7 of the manual, and check that the SPDIF output is enabled, and you might want to choose Native mode so as to leave the stream from your ADC alone.

John, my SPDIF is enabled as I mainly use the UnitiCute as streaming device form my NAS.

I use 24/94 files for SQ reasons only - works well.
Will have a look if setting of the SPDIF make any difference - It didn't come into mind as the SPDIF input is also 24/96 - same as file streaming.

why not 24/192 on the network?

is that flac and wav?

is a firmware update coming to correct this?

i have quite a lot of 24/192 from HDtracks Some sound considerably better than 24/96 (eagles)  would a qute not play these

Not difficult really

Why not 24/192 ? The UnitiCute would not pass it to the DAC - its SPDIF OUT is limited to 24/96

I'm playing 24/96 FLAC uncompressed files that have been up-sampled from standard redbook CD by dbPoweramp software using their DSP dithering options.

Besides that, I do not think that 192 would add any significant improvement (sound already is really fine, analog, lifelike and with excellent 3d), though I have not tried 192.

I have a share for all my current HD stuff playing via HDX, I don't want to duplicate it to play via a Qute

unless the HDX could play the 192, and if transcode a copy in 96, it could send that to a qute??  is there a feature where the hdx know what the qute can handle, some sort of upnp protocol??

no idea.  will have to investigate closer to the time
