TIVO remote and Naim amp ?

Posted by: james n on 21 September 2011

My Virgin Media TIVO remote has the option to control AV equipment. To make things simple as i use my Naim kit for TV sound, i'd like to get the remote to control the volume on my XS amp. Every other manufacturer is listed apart from Naim so before i trawl through the codes, does anyone know the code or equivalent i could use ?

TIA

Gives me the code 1217 so that gets me started at least.

Hmm - none of the usual codes worked, so I went into manual database search. After 5 presses i found the correct code and now the TiVo remote will control mute and volume on the XS

I would if i knew the code which you can't find if you put the remote in database search mode (and after trying the common codes i gave up and used the search)

You just have to keep pressing the channel up button in remote mode until the amp mutes. I tried all the codes for Philips / Arcam / Meridian and none of those worked with the amp. 0297 which is a common Naim code gives an error.

The plan is to take the n-Vi off TV sound duties (no more watiing for it to start up) and let the NDX do it so i'll used the Nait to do the TV volume.

Thanks for the link James.

How are you finding Tivo? We've still got the old V+ boxes which along with the remote control must be the worst pieces of electronic hardware i've ever come across. You press one button on the remote and box displays an action for another and that's when it does decide to respond. The upside is that we're in a cable area so the picture is stable no matter what the weather is doing - HD looking superb.

I used the original Thomson Scenium TiVo box until they killed off the service earlier this year. Changed our TV-viewing life! Absolutely loved it, so much so that we went over to Virgin Media to see what they were offering. We simply couldn't believe how expensive it was! Very disappointed so we went and bought a Humax FOX-T2 instead, which isn't as cute or as capable as the TiVo machine but pretty darned good and no contract.

We've only had it a couple of days but it's been very good so far. We had the V+ box before this which did a sterling job but it had slowed up somewhat and could go very un-responsive to the remote - a reboot would cure that. In comparison the TiVo speeds through the menus and is a very powerful little unit. Picture quality and Sound (via S/PDIF) is better too than the old V+ box. It's also very quiet and generates less heat than the old one (and i can set it remotely from my iPhone !). For £4 more a month it was a no brainer to change.

Oh and the discreet black box and subdued green lights match the Naim kit nicely too

Like Frank I had one of the original Thomson TiVo boxes and it was fantastic - it was responsive and simple to use and just did what it should do. I paid £250 for mine and then there was a tenner a month subscription so it was hardly "cheap" but it was more than worth the expense.

I keep toying with the new Virgin TiVo box - £50 for a 500Gb unit and an extra £3 or £4 a month compared to the cost of the original Thomson box seems a decent price (but the box remains the property of Virgin). Have to say that I think the Virgin implementation of TiVo has been made overly complicated - IMO it's been made to look too pretty and "dynamic" and the actual working area of the UI is quite small. It sorely needs the ability to take an external keyboard as the on screen text entry isn't crisp like the old Thomson one was - it's slow and laggy - but it does do what a TiVo should do.

I think if you had an original TiVo you'll keep finding yourself comparing the Virgin one unfavourably to your memory of what the original was like to use - crisp and fresh - wheras if you are going from a V+ box you'll find it a bit of a revelation!

Hmph, when we were looking the TiVo Virgin box was being quoted at £200 or more.

That was the original TiVo box cost and a lot of Virgin Media customers are rather vocal on the forums that they feel like they've been conned at having to pay out £200 for their TiVos and then its price has been dropped so much so quickly...
