Yet Another Box Set From Pink Floyd

Posted by: HiFiKid on 22 September 2011

Hi

With all the remastered albums being re-realesed yet again on vinyl and cd.  Along with several box sets.

What is the best versions to buy.  The 2007 box set not remastered can be picked up for about 1/2 the price of the new one.

Superb music but what is the best way to obtain it.

Nip into the store and stuff a copy up your jumper. Not worth paying for it, particularly as you probably own it already.

Forget it, spend your money on something new. Resist the money grabbing bastards, VFM is likely to be very poor.

Howard,

Adrian has one of the new boxsets and a vinyl.

Will see  what he thinks of them later today.

Hi all

I found an earlier box set on ebay with all the same cd's in for a 1/3rd the price brand new and thought I will buy that.  However when asked I paid i stated purchased on the understanding item is geniune ( Ref dodgy beatles box sets on ebay alledgedly).  My purchase was cancelled by the seller.

I think that means there may be dodgy sets about as well.

Dont buy off evilbay.

If you need to start a Floyd collection of CDs for the first time?

Buy the originals one by one off  hmv/play/Amazon or there sellers.

Or just hang on for a few days for feed back on the new remastered cds and box sets.

Last Friday, a reviewer from a dutch newspaper wrote that he could hear footsteps in Breathe in the air on the when playing the new Dark Side of the Moon remaster. I immediately put on my 1992 20th anniversary edition of the album but was not able to detect these steps.... I wonder, is the new remaster also a new mix?

Or perhaps the dude doing the re-master had hob nail boots on.

I just heard an interview with Nick Mason on Front Row (BBC Radio 4, 26.09.11) which is probably worth seeking out. In the preparation for the Wish You Were Here set, they found a believed-lost recording of Shine On with Stefan Grapelli playing gypsy violin throughout. They played some of it on the radio. Yehudi Menuin (also at Abbey Road at the time) declined to take part as he didn't feel comfortable improvising. They all believed the tape had been recorded over.

Must say quite made me want to buy it.

Mason sounds desperate for them to play together again, although said it would take a charity request "bigger than Geldof" to make it happen, but clearly they have all discussed it.

Nick Mason has played (separately) with both David Gilmour and Roger Waters, and clearly regards each as friends. Problem is that Gilmour and Waters can't stand each other: even if Rog is prepared to bury the hatchet, Dave certainly isn't!

It's a great shame that we can't spool back to the completion of The Wall, before Rog went on to sack Rick Wright, and then write and produce The Final Cut with his former bandmates reduced to sidemen, before trying to "dissolve" Pink Floyd.

But a reunion won't happen, and with Syd and Rick gone, what point would be served?

Back on point, has anyone been able to compare today's released remasterings with what went previously?

graham,

Dave Gilmour also played with Roger on his Wall tour this year.

They did have a reunion,They headlined in Hyde Park a couple of years back.

I have it on DVD.

I like the new remaster of DSOTM vinyl.

Stu, interesting to hear you like the new DSOTM on vinyl -pretty tempted but not sure if I should get the cd version for the extra material. The whole immersion set looks pretty expensive in my opinion but could easily be tempted.

Gary,

What i like about the new vinyl remaster is its clarity.

Not in a over compressed or loudness wars way.

Words, He got off like a right ,Is as clear as day on this. You dont have to try and listen,If you get what i mean?

Even the download that comes with it is good for a mp3 on my mac and itouch.

I am looking forward to the WYWH vinyl now.

Stu, point taken, but I was thinking of Waters, Gilmour et al performing new music together. I think that it's a bit sad that Roger Waters is effectively running a Pink Floyd tribute band these days.

Anyway, I was interested to read your initial thoughts about the new DSOTM vinyl (I bought the 30th anniversary LP earlier this year, before this new one was announced, sadly).

No doubt someone will listen to the new CDs and LPs, and let us know soon how they compare with what's gone before.

PS: I posted this before your post, just above, appeared.

Graham,

The new DSOTM vinyl it miles better than the 30th imo.

I wont be playing the original vinyl again,As i like the new one more.

Take a punt on it while its still £17 on amazon, your Quads will love it.

It might cost a bit?

But you only live once.LOL.

I see the DSOTM vinyl on Amazon has gone up a fiver.

May be good idea for anyone interested to pre-order WYWH & The Wall before those prices go up too.

Are there anymore PF vinyl re-releases coming out soon or next year?

Stu,

I think the original Alan Parsons multichannel mix was 4.0 - i.e. quad. I enjoyed it when it was released as a DVD-A bootleg.  Rather more than  the multichannel SACD actually. I'm told AP used to live just down the road from here at The Grange and had a rather cool studio there.

Interesting about the DSOTM reissue.  The 30th anniversary reissue was pretty dreadful.  Almost as bad as the MFSL releases, which get worse and worse the better the system.  I reminded myself of this only recently.  My original and '80s pressings are getting on a bit.  Only question is, can I possibly need another copy...???
