Yet Another Box Set From Pink Floyd

Posted by: HiFiKid on 22 September 2011

Hi

With all the remastered albums being re-realesed yet again on vinyl and cd.  Along with several box sets.

What is the best versions to buy.  The 2007 box set not remastered can be picked up for about 1/2 the price of the new one.

Superb music but what is the best way to obtain it.

OK I've pulled the trigger on DSOTM and WYWH. I hope not to be disappointed.

They were £40.92 as Debs said DSOTM has gone up, Rock Box were cheaper but then they charge P&P on top, therefore becoming more expensive.

I ordered DSOTM, thanks Stu...

I sold the 30th-crap and my original German pressing starts to fall apart...

Stu, is the new DSOTM LP pressing quiet (surface, I mean) and where was it pressed?

As to the CDs, it appears that, if you buy the complete set, the CDs are packed in not-terribly-kind-to-surface cardboard sleeves. Do the individual CD releases come in jewel boxes?

And can anyone who has heard the CDs please let us know how they compare?

Words, He got off like a right ,Is as clear as day on this. You dont have to try and listen,If you get what i mean?

Even the download that comes with it is good for a mp3 on my mac and itouch.

I am looking forward to the WYWH vinyl now.

Stu

I see the DSOTM vinyl on Amazon has gone up a fiver.

May be good idea for anyone interested to pre-order WYWH & The Wall before those prices go up too.

Are there anymore PF vinyl re-releases coming out soon or next year?

Debs

Debs,

Use the download that came with your DSOTM.

You will then get updates from the  Pink Floyd site about whats coming.

My copy of DSOTM arrived from Amazon yesterday and last night I listened to the album. I think they've done a superb job on this remaster. The whole package oozes quality and the SQ certainly didn't disappoint. I have 3 versions of the album including the copy I bought in 1974. This is the best.

I have mine in my hands right now...will tell later about sound quality.

Packaging and artwork is great!!!

Ok...did some A/B-testing with this one (my own in NM-):

http://www.discogs.com/Pink-Fl...-Moon/release/495796

Hmmm...difficult...the US-pressing sounds more "powerful", more "alive"...the new one is a bit more detailed, more "blackness" in the sound, much more quiet (of course, since newer....lol).

In my ears, the US-pressing vibrates more, breathes more...

Vocals IMHO are clearer and moire present in the new one.

The drums sounded better in the US-pressing...like said difficult.

I like both and I think the 2011-version beats the crap out of the 30th-anniversary-thingy.

If one doesn´t have an original one ( early pressing) the new one is the way to go.

Value-for-money-wise pretty much unbeatable...

Good job IMHO.

Wow, just got my vinyl copy of DSOM and it is a beautiful pressing, very quite, cymbals and hi-hats really nice, clear base lines etc.etc....but what counts is the music....far out!

The link of discogs is to the original US-LP...

So yes, I did compare vinyl on my humble system.

But I listened to the new version one more time.

It really sounds fantastic and for 21,99€ a REAL bargain.

I pre-ordered Wish and Wall...yeah!!!

I have a UK first pressing of Wish and the 40AP 1750~1  Japanese first pressing of Wall...I am eager to check them against the new remasters...lol.

The best sounding versions in my experience (whether CD or vinyl) are the oldest ones.

I've replaced my 1994 Floyd remastered CDs with originals because they simply sound better on a good system.

Remasters are not generally for audiophiles, though of course the packaging and collectibility aspect is agreeable.

Yup,

my thoughts too...the US-LP from 1973 (SMAS 1163) sounds simply "warmer" and in my ears more musical...

Any other thoughts???

I just compared the "Wish you were here" -CD (2011) a) with my UK first pressing on vinyl and b) with PBTHALs awesome vinyl-rip of the UK first pressing....

Winner:

1) My "old" UK-1st press on vinyl

2) PBTHALs vinyl-rip

3) The new CD "2011-remasters"

I have a 1979/80 first pressing of The Wall. Packaging was falling apart although the vinyl is mint, so I bought a remastered for the packaging. Tried the records back to back and OMG, the original was in a class of its own. Be interesting to see if the new Wall remaster on vinyl comes with the transparent soft plastic 'Pink Floyd The Wall' removable sticker that was on the front cover of the original. I still have that.

Just ordered DSOM from Music Direct. This'll be my third version. One is the 30th and another earlier pressing that sounds shite. The 30th isn't great either, so I'm hoping this'll be a lot better.

Yesterday i enjoyed a back to back shoot-out of the 30th anni-vinyl vs. the new Remaster vinyl.

This was great fun, haven't played DSOTM for ages so ended up playing both versions twice.

The 30th sounds more soulful, fuller and as intended, the new re sounds brighter, i can hear what's been done to the clarity of vocals etc, but to me this is a re-mix version and sounds far more digital.

I don't dislike the new remaster, it may be a grower but being a purist i find myself prefering the 30th version.

Also... amazing how exactly the same the gatefold sleeves and extras are, difficult to tell apart without reading the little date on the small white sticker : )

Interesting, naim-nymph...

I had the 30th and I hated its bloated/too fatt-sound and therefore sold it.

Yep, I can second your findings in terms of "digital sound": Like said, my US-pressing sounds more "vinyl" than the 2011-remaster.

Posted on: 03 October 2011 by naim_nymph

MusicLover,

The new remaster sounds remixed with a vocal crispness, the instruments are more separated and defined, it's very different and anything other than bloated so you may like this new remaster.

Be interesting to hear your opinion : )

naim_nymph,

I have the new remaster on vinyl and its quite good.

MUCH better IMHO then the 30th-anniver.-LP, but not as "alive" and "warm" as my original US-LP.

I guess I'm the only one who thinks having one copy is enough. If I rip a CD then I'm beginning to get in to the habit of deleting the bonus tracks which are earlier takes of final version that is already on the CD (not just for PF).

OK Piper is different because there are Mono and Stereo versions, but surely the original vinyl copy, or rip thereof, is adequate for the remaining elpees. Perhaps, I'm just not a big enough fan of the second and third generation PFs. I have all the albums, but only once. The original artefacts sound pretty good to me.

I think PF should not reform, as I just think the result would disappoint.

Sometimes it is best to just make your Final Cut and then move on to something new.

The one-off in Hyde Park was very good though, but would have liked them to play Interstellar Overdrive as it contains my favourite PF guitar riff.

All the best, Guy
