The Best Greatest Hits and Comp Albums??
Posted by: Gale 401 on 30 September 2011
I will start with this, As its what i was playing when i thought of starting the thread.
Will through this in the mix also.
Incomparable.
Not sure I read the title correctly but this is my favourite Greatest Hats album
The best compilations I can think of at the moment are
1. The Harvest Years by Shirley and Dolly Collins
2. 1 (One) by the Beatles (or the Red & Blue albums)
3. The Kinks Files by the Kinks
4. More Greatest Hits by Bob Dylan
5. Return of the Manticore by Emerson, Lake & Palmer
6. The Young Person's Guide To King Crimson
7. 100 Hits by Chas & Dave
8. Peter Hammill's Greatest Hits Volume 5 (sorry made that one up).
When you said you'd through Billy Idol in to the mix, did you mean skip?
No 7 is a blatant lie, by 99.
One of the best

Gertcha ... sometimes I think there Ain't No Pleasing You, it's enough to drive a C&D fan Snooker Loopy. I know I Rabbit on a bit sometimes, but I've got my beer on the Sideboard dear, well at least in Ossie's Dream. Still I guess that in Sickness or in Health I'll always be a fan of the Stars Over 45.
Guy,
I did have to double check it was hits and not HATs
Stu
Very Highly Recommended in my not so humble opinion! : )
Debs
One of my personal favourite compilations is this fantastic double album of singles from Dave.
Can be purchased for a bargain on Amazon!

I can't argue with Decade - superb! I reckon The Doors' Weird Scenes Inside The Goldmine should get a mention too.
And then there's this one. Sadly only available as a cassette. The LP and CD did without the B sides, which was a great shame, although you could eventually get it on disc 1 of the Join The Dots CD set.
Mine is now in tiny pieces beside a road somewhere between Fort William and Mallaig. Don't ask...
And last, but definitely not least, probably the best compiled album of '70s soul. Was available as a double vinyl album but not sure about CD.
This is pretty good and sounds great.
and the Fall 458489.
and this one cuts the mustard too.
SJB
Now, how could I have forgotten this gem. Only released in Japan AFAIK in a lovely gatefold double album. Great sound quality too, so well worth tracking down if you're a fan of early Genesis and still spin vinyl.
2 from me, both from bands who arguably made better singles than albums;
The second side of this contains B sides; Mesh and Hurt are particular highlights.
Richard,
I found a import cd thanks.
The CURE album is a good call.
Stu
Richard,
I am a massive Genesis fan and have i thought? everything they have put out on vinyl cd and boots
This vinyl album must have gone under my radar.
Now looking for a copy.
Cheers .
Stu
This has to be one of the greatest collections ever especially when coupled with volumes 11-20. It was originally released as 20 vinyl elpees by Bam Caruso and gathers together so much great music.
Stu, re. The Story of Genesis, I found this from eil.com:
GENESIS The Story Of Genesis (Rare 1978 Japanese promotional-only white label vinyl double LP featuring a unique compilation of Gabriel & post-Gabriel era tracks & including fold out Japanese/lyric insert, 8-page full size photo booklet, superb unique gatefold picture sleeve with Japanese biography information inside SFX-10061~2)
I found mine some years back in the bargain bin of LSD records in Wilton. Sadly no Obi and a bit of sleeve wear but everything else was present and good. Good luck, hope you manage to track down a copy.
Well done finding a CD copy of Kind of Soul. I might look for one on CD too so I can put it on the 'Pod for the car. The vinyl is well worth getting too, with great SQ, even though one of the tracks accidentally had the fade-out cut into the run-out groove!!

A fantastic compilation album, i have this on CD, and a 2xLP set, both A+
This may be one of the best of the best comp albums! : )
