Countdown to the reissue of the year...............

Posted by: Sloop John B on 04 October 2011

31st October, Samhain, the Celtic feast that has since morphed into an American abomination,  marks one of the two great doorways of the Celtic year, for the Celts divided the year into two seasons: the light and the dark, at Beltaine on May 1st and Samhain on November 1st.
Samhain was the more important festival, marking the beginning of a whole new cycle, just as the Celtic day began at night. For it was understood that in dark silence comes whisperings of new beginnings, the stirring of the seed below the ground. Whereas Beltaine welcomes in the summer with joyous celebrations at dawn, the most magically potent time of
this festival is November Eve, the night of October 31st, known today of course, as Halloween.

and from this journey into the darkness of winter 20 years ago came the sound of 4 guys chopping down the Joshua Tree.

This is the one I'll be getting, alas not in the record shop I bought the original as it has long since gone.

Just 2 weeks to go!

surely there is someone else on the forum for which this is a landmark album?

I remember when "The Fly" was released as the first singe - Dublin's evening newspaper printed the lyrics in full on the front page wanting to know what the hell was going on with Bono and the lads.

The sound of 4 guys sawing down a Joshua Tree

Too many landmark albums on my list for this one stand out but a landmark it is and I've had the order in for a couple of months (ish).

As in many such enormous releases, the amount of material I would listen to only once dwarfs the rest and does not justify the price for me.

I do really love the Achtung Baby music -- it's about the only U2 music I listen too very regularly these days.

it may not be called an Immersion set but immersing myself is what I have been doing.

I tried to buy it in Dublin last week to no avail, only single and double CD available, a real self-fulfilling prophesy from Dublin record shops- so I had to revert to Amazon delivery who duly obliged this morning.

It's a great package, LP sized, full of the Achtung Baby photography and a few sycophantic articles.

I've not delved too much yet so far having listened only to the original album three times.

This album really stands up with anything in my collection.

In the 20 years since its first release I have married and become a father and it has never become a dust catcher so in a way it's interwoven into my DNA as well.

I'm ready for the laughing gas................

SJB,

fookin over priced over produced SQ is shite.

You would think Bono who cares so much about the planet would get someone to remaster there albums so they sound good on vinyl and cd????

Long gone are the days when you could just sit in the pub and Dirk and Barry would come over and say can you write us a song?

A hit?

Nice if you are a collector? But i cant see anyone paying mega bucks for this in ten years time just for the art work bits.

My original CD still gets played once a week as it has done since it came out.

It used to get my kids out of bed in the mornings ready for school along with John Lee Hookers the Healer.

The most pompous group ever!

Can't imagine anyone wanting to hear a couple of CDs being expanded by a whole more pile of shit.

Particularly when the Beach Boys' masterpiece is released, far too late.

Stu

To my ears the remaster sounds fine, no loudness wars, in fact i cannot notice any difference to the original but I haven't done an A-B.

unless of course they don't think it's a pile of shit!

very little pompous about Achtung Baby, Brian Wilson's favourite album apparently.

Listening to CD 6 KINDERGARTEN – THE ALTERNATIVE ACHTUNG BABY

It's fascinating to hear these outakes and rather like The Beatles Anthology what ended up on the album invariably was the best take.

One and Love is Blindness, lyrically the finished article but so different to the final one.

In others the tune is there but lyrics are very different.

"Trying to throw your arms around the world" I may even prefer to the album version. It has a great "demo" feel with the sort of harmony U2 don't often do.

I'm enjoying this!

... which is always the main thing. If this factor is in order it's money well spent.

CD 2 - Zooropa.

a bit like WYWH being added to the DSOTM Immersion set for me.

I love Zooropa, where Achtung Baby is full of heartache and angst, Zooropa is throwaway fun albeit with a some serious undertones.

1991-93, their artistic peak undoubtedly and not a height hit by too many others for me.
