walkman pro

I've had a walkman pro for about 15 years and haven't used it for a couple of years or so. Whan I last did so it seemed to have a distinct 'whine' so I guess it needs a service. Can anyone recommend anywhere, or does it just go back to Sony? I recall reading on the old forum that the Naim guys have all got walkmans (walkmen?) do you tweak them in house or send them off for servicing?

On a slightly related note - I was powering the walkman from an old Snaps (which had been modified to give one 6v and one 24v output). The cap has gone leaky so if I can get the w/man serviced I'll sort the Snaps out too. However I'm not suprised it needs attention - serial no 000126 - can anyone beat that? Naim - if you're after museum pieces I'll gladly swap for something new (CDS.. 52 ... 500 !)

Is the whine mechanical or electronic (i.e. from headphones or mechanics).

If it's electronic, it's usually the decoupling cap's on the DC-DC converter - an easy job to replace.

It's electronic (through the speakers) and a fairly high pitched 'wheeeeee' all the time the unit is playing. I think it's probably had it for years but it is more noticable now my system's better. To be honest I'm sure the walkman's mechanics are equally in need of a thorough overhaul - I used it solidly for years while I was at College and hardly at all since. I'd like to give it a thorough spruce up but obviously it would depend how much it was going to cost me as to whether it is worth it. Hence the request for a trustworthy repair agent.
