It is magnificent. I can't see it on their site any more, but originally seen there is this goody (I think Matthew pointed it out to me originally):

That just looks like a very mild reworking of one of Mike Hanson's or Mr. Pig's forum postings.

Life is so complicated! Vuk's telling me my musical tastes are undiscerning. Meanwhile, my wife complains that my tastes are elitist, and I should stop ridiculing her preference for "Pop" and "Easy Listening". What's a semi-discriminate music lover like me to do?!? frown Sigh…

So Vuk, are you looking forward to your audition of the Nelly Furtado disc this weekend? razz Catch you later!

with your championing on Nelly Furtado, isn't that a bit like the pot calling the kettle black

It does seem like a possible paradox. I suppose I should have stressed the "Easy Listening" aspect. My wife wants musical pablum, and she eschews anything ambitious, intense, challenging, etc.

Yes, Nelly Furtado is pop. However, if you've heard the album you'll realize that it's quite remarkable in its range of styles, impressive performances, production qualities, etc. It isn't typical pop-for-twelve-year-olds. Catch you later!

I'm sure you're right - to me she seems almost as challenging and impressive as Maria Carey. Pop for 14 year olds perhaps ?

Have you listened to the entire album, or only the singles on the radio? The singles, which are acceptable choices for the target market, don't represent the best work on the album.

no - I haven't listened to the whole album, but I have heard a number of tracks on the radio, as the commercial stations are slobbering over her in a rather similar way to the awful Macy Gray.

Her voice is OK I suppose, although not particularly distinctive, but the choice of songs and production is very bland (IMHO) ... although not an opinion based on the whole album. Seems odd that the radio stations would pick all the crap tracks however.

That's a silly statement, and you know it. Pop radio stations generally pander to the pablum eaters. Many of the tracks on the album are little too "experimental" (from the perspective of pop radio music programmers) to fit the limited format.

BTW, I originally purchased the album because it was praised a couple of times here on CBC Radio, which is a much better match for my tastes than pop stations. It was also produced by members of the Philosopher Kings, which is another band that I enjoy. Finally, Nelly Furtado came from a hip hop background, and I thought that might inject an interesting twist into the album.

In the end it's quite enjoyable, and that's coming from someone who generally hates "pop".

that's true, except that the radio station I've heard the tracks on is not strictly a 'pop' radio station and tends to play more interesting choices usually, although still quite mainstream.

I guess Nelly just isn't to my taste - rather like Macy ... must be the 'y' on the end

Wow, wish Britney gave me those lectures on "Electronic Materials" and "Optical Electronics" at York University. I might have stayed behind for some one-2-one sessions.

Actually if anyone is taking electronics at university (Fox???), the chapters in that website contain the real stuff.

I don't like seeing Pop ridiculed: after all, it makes up a significant chunk of my collection.

I'll remind detractors that The Beatles were a pop band, and in their day the Brandenburg Concertos would be the rough equivalent of pop. There's good, bad and indifferent, like any genre, "Easy Listening" included.
