Back to Naim

Posted by: Matteo on 15 October 2018

Hi all

The failured purchase of the 152/155 combo was always for me a big regret of the past.

Recently, I read every thread on this and other forums containing "152" and "155".

In the past I owned Nait XS, CD5XS, ND5XS, Headline and Stageline.

Casually, I found a 2017 ex-demo combo for 1,500 € and a recent s/h FCXS with 2 SNAIC 5 for 700 € and bought them.

So I came back to Naim.

Source is a quite recent mid-spec LP12 (Trampolin 2, Kore, Akito 2b, T-Kable, Akurate Radikal, Adikt), with a Lejonklou Slipsik 6 as phono.

ND5 XS 2 is on the radar though.

Speakers are Linn Majik 109. Interconnects and speakers cables are Linn Silver and K200 (half K400).

The Majik 109 are away for a woofer modifications, so it will take some weeks to report back my impressions.

Regards

What did you have before rejoining the Naim fraternity?

Hi .sjb

As reported in my profile, since late 2014 I'm running a Linn AK/1 - A2200/1 combo.

In 2008-2009 I used an Exposure 2010s. From 2009-2011, a Nait XS.

In 2011-2014, I had LFD Zero Mk3, Sonneteer Orton and Linn Majik I.

From 2009 to 2015, speakers were Spendor A6.

The trio (152/155/FC XS) is powered on since Friday (and surprisingly cold; in my room there are approx 22 C°).

I like the sound a lot (even at very low volume, it remains enjoyable and not congested).

Bass is spectacular.

Linn M109 are not that sensitive, but I do not need to go up than 9 o'clock to get an high volume.

Just so long as this was not a surprise!

While I'm waiting for a 5 mt. pair of Linn K20, I'm using my old 2.5 pair of Linn K200 (half K400) and I found the sound too bright.

Which is the capacitance of the old Linn K200? I suppose that the excessive brightness of the sound could be correlated to this.

After a couple of months and about 150 hours, I can say that my new 5 mt. pair of Linn K20 (properly terminated with Linn Knekt bananas soldered by Key System in Rome) sounds amazingly good and a lot better then my previous 2,5 mt. pair of old Linn K200.

Much better bass and no bright sound at all.

Just a little less detailed, but more musical and better suited to my tastes.

I guess that synergy is the key ... and also Naim's reccomendations regarding speaker cables.

Glad your enjoying your return to Naim amps Matteo.

Currently playing 'What's Going On' through 5m run of K20 right now (with Valhalla LP12/Ittok/K9, Nait, Kans) and thoroughly enjoying it.

I tried 3.5m runs of NAC A5 but didn't enjoy the music as much. Perhaps cos the Nait was designed with NAC A4, or 5m is much better, or maybe it's just my ears.
