It comes in very handly - helps to balance the sound, especially at low volume.
In my room, I have to move the balance slightly to the right.

My right ear is not as strong as my left, so it's great to balance the sound. I use it all the time. Except when I have visitors with good/undamaged hearing. Not all room layouts allow positioning of the speakers and or listener position - a balance control helps create the perfect balance. Simples.
