Music on Special Offer Thread?

Posted by: sjt on 14 December 2016

I am wondering if it would be legit to have a thread in here dedicated to music album downloads from legitimate retailers that are currently on special offer.

As an example I was just looking through the what are you listening to mega thread just now and came across the Melody Gardot record because someone was listening to it. I have wanted this for a while but it was always expensive (about 20 quid). On a whim I went over to a place I usually go to buy music downloads and by a blind stroke of luck it was on special offer at just over half price. Deluxe edition is cheaper than the standard edition! I bought it straight away.

So I thought it might be a good idea to have a thread dedicated to posting albums that are on special offer at the moment with not-so-subtle hints as to where you could get them from, when the offer expires and how much is knocked off etc, so people could see instantly anything that was on special. It would certainly be a thread I would come back to often.

I did a search and couldn't find anything like this in the forum, but usually the searches on these forums are rubbish so this is not a guarantee!

There might need to be a few rules, e.g. the poster has no affiliation with the seller, only legitimate download shops / sites etc.

Just a thought still in the half-bakery...

Hi Gary,

I recently encountered this issue where I tried to rip the 5 disc TD Tangents box set. Each CD was made of 2 sessions the second of which contained a player app which automatically loaded when inserted into the computer's CD drive and introduced errors in dBpweramp when trying to rip the discs.

I eventually had to create an image/BIN file and cue sheet using ImgBurn and then edit the cue sheet to delete the second session data leaving only the audio data which could then be used with the BIN file to burn using ImgBurn onto a new CD. This audio only CD could then be read accurately by dBpoweramp to obtain a secure rip.

Great new Bach recording, that practically swings, if one can use such a word for a baroque chamber orchestra but anyhow,  great performance and excellent sound quality,  and as usual with the S.L. recordings, a sound stage with depth and clear placement of the musicians involved.

''Plenteous expertise from the ensemble but you'd have to pick out Jesenka Balic Zunic's tender playing on the Violoncello da Spalla, Jakob Bloch Jespersen in ideal repertoire for him, and the striking freshness and fluency of Anna Jobrant's soprano solos. It was free, and full. Andrew Mellor, reviewer for Gramophone magazine''

Thanks for the tip Peet. It's a great recording indeed!

Just bought it.

Can one of you please clarify: are you finding this discounted on MusicMagpie? I've had a look at that site and found it awful, very difficult to browse, and the first few things Intried searching for didn't come up, somI putbthis in expecting to find it and nothing...  i can only find it through the soundliaison link, at a standard price (that's not saying it's a bad price)

When I go to their website and scroll down, I see a price of 10 euro (instead of 15 euro) for the flac version.

Seeing an Art of Noise post in the what are you listening to thread reminded me - I got ART OF NOISE - & What Have You Done With My Body God from Juno download for about 12 quid on flac. I think its about 4 CDs worth and there are all sorts of versions of early art of noise tracks. Not on special offer but I thought it was a reasonable bargain. Nothing like as good as the now-normal-price Maria Callas box set though!!

Is that one of their amazing offers? If so, what, as I don't see anything obvious?

Offers on Qobuz for quite a number of albums of Naxos and NoMadMusic label...

Posted on: 17 February 2017 by Innocent Bystander

I take it this is as in their normal 'deals/offers/promo' tabs, as opposed to a megadeal like the recent Callas/Cohen ones?

Music Magpie: Buy One Get One Free (link).... MM have reopened their offer for used CD’s. As usual with MM, the stock is always changing so content can be variable to ones taste and expectations, but worth checking in every few days and using them to fill holes in music collections, for literally pennies.

Always worth checking MusicMagpie (was DOverstocks) on Amazon, they have many CDs from 1p, + £1.26 p&p. I have been buying from them for many years now, most are second hand but very good condition. Out of the 100+ I have bought only 2 have gone back, 1 wrong CD, 1 CD wouldn't play, both replaced straight away.

This dropped into my inbox and it's a very nice offer from Qobuz available until 15th March.

Cheers for the tip, Stevee, it's a nice offer.  Just a tip, in case anyone is having the problem I did with getting hold of it via the website:

The album offer showed up on the front page of the qobuz download shop, but when I clicked on it, I just got a 'this page does not exist' error.

And if I searched for the album, it showed up in the shop, but not for free.

But when I tried by going via the link in the email they sent (entitled Qobuz Hi-Res: John Mayer, Thundercat, Summer Moon, plus selected releases, promotions and preorders!), it worked.

If you got to Joe Bonamassa's site he has a 12 cut free download album. Unfortunately, it is mp3, but I got it anyway, and have not had a chance to listen as yet.

The Tallis Scholars' own label, Gimell, is closing its CD and Download store at the end of March and they're offering a closing down sale.

If you buy one album (any format) then the code FAREWELLTEN gets you 10% off and so forth up to buying four (code FAREWELLFORTY) that gets you 40% off.

If you like Renaissance choral music then this is a bargain (e.g. their Palestrina compilation is just £4.79 for a double album when bought as part of a foursome).

I've gone for the aforementioned Palestrina, the Victoria Lamentations, John Browne Eton Choirbook and a Josquin album of Masses, ranging from CD quality to 24/96 (though there are some at 24/192).

If you're unfamiliar with the genre then at least treat yourself to their version of Allegri's Miserere - a true spine-tingler in anyone's language.

It is on special offer for a few more days,  just received a newsletter announcing end of sale.
