ND555 specification - what a load of... mistakes?

packerman posted:

The ND 555 quick start guide on the naim website in customer support shows what's in the box and this includes 2 burndy leads and a hi-line.

It also shows you need a hi-fi system and illustrates what a hi-fi system looks like in case you did not know.

The power supply is still called a CD555PS power supply even though CD 555 is discontinued. I would have thought it would be renamed.

If you check Naim's website it says otherwise : No Burndy, No Hi-Line

If you click on "show all specifications"

You'll see this :

Which seems to be borrowed from the Nova specs as you'll also see volume control mentioned further up...

On Naim's website, you need to go to Customer support, quick start guides and look at the ND555 quick start guide and there you can see that there are 2 burndy leads in the box in section 1 of the guide.

I think this is a better indication of what you get than the specification page as this thread started with an observation that the specification information was not accurate

Thanks for your replies.

It’ll be great if the ND555 comes with burndies as one may expect at that price point.

nds came without burndys, so little chance of change....but we can hope.

ND555 is the replacement for CD555, which did come with both Burndies. Remember, NDS can be used with supplies other than 555PS; ND555 cannot.

As highlighted by packerman, the quick-start guide shows what it comes with, and mistakes on the ND555's web page is what this thread is all about.

The ND555 page is still seemingly WiP and being reviewed and will doubtless be amended in due course.  In fact, I see that some things have already been corrected.

As Packerman correctly points out, the ND555 quick-start guide shows that the Burndies come with the head unit. That makes sense as the 555PS comes with none and there's no other option here, so the pair of Burndies are the only option.  In such cases, where there's only one possible choice, Naim usually includes.

I notice that the ND555 white paper specifies "Requires 555 PS DR power supply"

Does this mean that the ND555 will not work with a Non-DR 555PS ?

Hi,

Correct - the ND555 *REQUIRES* the CD555PS - it cannot be used with an XPS or XP5XS...

Best

Phil

@Phil Harris, I think the question was would it work with a pre-DR CD555PS, which would be important for people running an NDS (or lower) on a pre-DR PSU.

........and unless the price has been written in tablets of stone, Naim could include anything they like in the box and adjust the paperwork and price accordingly.....me thinks ?

Not if you have already paid for a pair of Burndies so your your NDS can be powered by a CD555PS and then might possibly want to upgrade to the ND555. Naim would surely understand that many ND555 buyers will be coming from a NDS/555PS, would want to retain the PS and the Burndies, making additional Burndies superfluous. It would therefore seem sensible to offer the ND555 with or without Burndies, as with the NDS.

So those of us who already own the burndies can confidently expect a significant discount (£700?) on the £13k asking price. Happy days.

Keith

Except, according to the Quick start guide they already come with the ND555 head unit, and their pin configuration at the head unit end may* well be unique to the ND555...

* I don't know whether it is, but I'm sure we'll find out shortly...

I believe there’s a Naim dealer in the West Country who useless a now useless Burndy as a toilet chain.

No, that would be the Padded Cell “Are we sleep-walking out of Europe?” thread...

This reminds me of a pathetic joke, so here goes.

'Dejav who?'

Sorry, but it has been a long day.

Apologies to Roger if our silliness gets this moved to the dreaded Padded Cell.

There you go...

Thanks Chrissu... this brings back memories of the colonscopy I had a few weeks ago.  But how on earth do they get the camera around those tight bends?  ...and what, I'm wondering, does this have to do with ND555 specs?

Ah, I've figured it... the specs are in a white paper?     Hang on, no, they're not in a white paper, they're on the web site. The mystery remains.

PS - my colonoscopy was clear, by the way

I almost hit my gastroenterologist. He was “down there “ when he said ”I’ve got a cute”

He then went on to say I’ve got an acute angle and it would be difficult to get around it.

Ian, you missed that wonderful, sexy, aluminium cased, straight lined, modernistic remote control... this alone has got to be worth upgrading from whatever streamer you have to the ND555, surely

Sorry - I misread that bit, in that case the information I have is that it can be used on a non-DR 555PS but it (obviously) won't sound as good.

It used to mention the supplied accessories in the spec on the website for the ND555 but this only mentions :-

Zigbee® remote, Power-Line cable (UK denominations only), cleaning cloth, quick start guide

Which itself doesn't seem right as there's no power supply as part of the package. Looks more like something extracted from the Nova product sheet as it also mentions the rotary volume control further up...

I doubt it would be supplied without Burndy cables as the power supply options are limited to one or two 555PS supplies.

Zigbee remote would mean separate remote controls for streamer and preamp and no compatibility with universal and network (at present) remote controls, like Uniti range.  A mistake IMHO.

The new streamers still use system automation, like the old range, so you don’t need a separate remote for preamp control.
