Shame about that album, but all bands/artists get to a high point then go down hill or come back with better a few years down the road imo.
The new Joe Bonamassa album is my let down of the year so far.
Mark Kozelek 'Live at Lincoln Hall', free with 'Among the Leaves', or any order from Caldo Verde.
The live album is nice, but nothing really different from previous live albums, which like this one are often free with other orders from Caldo Verde, Mark's record label.
The bonus disc for 'Among the Leaves' is just alternate takes, and three live versions of tracks from the album. A couple more tracks are sticking with me on the album, but there are some poor tracks that get no better with repeated plays. At 30 minutes, with less than half the songs 'Among the Leaves' might have been good, but as a whole piece of work, for me it is not.
I hate to think that an artist like Mark Kozelek should lose any income from comments made here, but I have 'banged on' about his best work ('Old Ramon', 'April', 'Ghosts of the Great Highway', etc), and hopefully generated a few dollars in sales for his music, so being honest about what I (and my partner) feel is a lazy album is all I can do.
He does have a strange attitude to his fans, especially for someone who plays such intimate venues live. Basically he is an old misery, but with such a beautiful voice, and usually a talent for gentle melancholy song writing that all is forgiven.
Thanks for your replies Stu and Bruce, I hope this helps.
