Evolving the Naim Forum

Posted by: Charlie Henderson on 10 January 2019

Hi everyone,

For the Naim family, conversation and discussion is everything (apart from the music of course!)

We love to encourage the debate and support the sharing of some extraordinary expertise across the Naim Forum, and it is one of the foundations of our world. We all participate in the community in different ways, and to varying degrees, but one thing is for sure, it is fascinating, informative, passionate, and loads of fun.

So, we want to make it even easier to do this, and we’re going to be moving to a new Forum software platform from Tuesday 15th January 2019. Yes, it’ll be a change, but we're not just changing things for the sake of it. It’s a decision that’s not been taken lightly, and is simply intended to make it easier for you all to continue to do what you do best – share your thoughts, frustrations, expertise and aspirations. For example, you’ll be able to access elements of the Forum more easily from more devices, but the fundamentals of the Forum will remain as they are today.

And it goes without saying, you’ll be able to access and search all old and current topics. It may take a couple of weeks as we continue preparing an archive of all existing Forum posts, but we will lose nothing as we make the transition.

One of the great features of the new Forum is the ability to run polls. We intend to use these intensively as a feedback tool to create a more dynamic community, shaped by the feedback you provide, but it also gives all Forum members the opportunity to run their own polls too. Other features include the ability to access the Forum through a mobile app and post images directly, making the Forum a much more visually exciting place too.

I’m sure some may be concerned by the move but we are doing this to help evolve and continue supporting the Naim Forum as the heart of our community. We look forward to feedback as the team move things across, and please bear with us as we do so, it’s a significant team effort. I’m sensitive to the fact that the change may not suit everyone straight away, but we’re genuinely doing it for the right reasons – to ensure the future of the Naim Forum as the heart of our community.

There is a link to FAQs relating to this HERE.

Thanks,
Charlie, Richard, and the Naim Forum team.

However, put yourselves in the Naim position, overseeing this motley, sometimes rebellious mob of forumites, sit back and ask yourselves (without wishing to labour the point)  "What have they ever given us in return?! What has The Forum ever done for us?"

Simple! I would

not have bought the Nova had it not been for the positive feedback and encouragement of this forum.

Not everybody follows threads every minute every day. Some of us play "catch-up" every  few days. We have a life.

Ooops, just read Richard's subsequent post and glad to see that nesting and cut&paste will probably continue to exist.

But the same goes for the rest of us who also have a life and don’t want to spend it scrolling through pages of nested posts. Especially the ones containing the same photo several times in the “nest”.

I think one of us may be reading Richard’s post wrong because I read it opposite to you. I thought Richard meant that the new forum would allow people to highlight just the relevant bit of a post that they’re answering to and reply to it without having to quote the whole post and without having to nest.

Iliaria, you can quote as much, or as little of a post as you like.  The important thing is that you choose how much to quote by how much, or how little you highlight.

No email to me @RichardDane and I’ve checked spam.

I think this should be much better on the new forum because on the current one if you are trying to edit a quote with an iPhone, it’s a slow and tedious process. Also multiple nested quotes end up as one or two characters wide at the right of the screen, so totally unreadable any postings like that on an iPhone.

Graeme, I've checked and I don't see you in the Beta group.  Is this an error?  If so, let me know and I'll pass on to Naim.

Curious. I didn't think I was in the Beta group yet I got an early invite. Hmmm.

Sorry Richard, my mistake. Didn’t realise it was Beta group only at this point.

No problem Graeme.  Naim invited the beta test members to test the beta of the new forum before going live, at which point all other members can apply to join the new forum.

Typical, just like school.

The nerds got to play with the new software and the 'jocks' had to make do with girls.

Girls are often rather good fun...

Just don’t tell her she’s part of the beta test group...

I would avoid telling her that she's the "consolation prize " for those that didn't make it into the Beta test group

Will our forum rankings be maintained [@mention:77737380917463397]?

................... blimey, I can see a few feathers being ruffled over that one!

I have no clue why feathers would be ruffled, lost on me.

Kevin's enquiry, (as yet unanswered), made me chuckle, as I suspect that to some, their Community Ranking is much more important to them than is strictly healthy.

Sorry, it's just the old cynic in me coming out!

You're right Dave.  I've just booked an appointment with my doctor for next Wednesday 16th Jan...  I figure by the time 24 hours is up, I'll need some strong tranquilisers, and possibly a referral to a specialist who can help me deal with failure if my ranking drops.  This change could have serious consequences

Mind you, if my ranking goes higher, I'll be fine.

Don’t worry, the new forum doesn’t have numeric rankings.

Hope the new one works better in mobile.

The one and only thing I have problems with on this forum,it is adding photos from my mobile.
I can only insert image-links.

Everything I have put into this forum I have done from my mobile.

Do I understand correctly that our profiles will not be transferred to the new forum and should be saved by ourselves if we want to keep the content, .e.g. "Biography"?

Yes, we will all be registering as new members.

I’m very pleased Naim are changing the forum platform. I think there are a number of areas which could be improved.  It looks like ‘’posting images’’ and ‘’quoting/requoting’’ issues are being looked at.

My main bugbear is the ‘Featured Topics’ (sticky’s) which appear at the top of each room. You have to stroll through half a page (10 featured topics) until you get to any threads. Hopefully this can be streamlined or better organised on the new platform.

Good luck to all those involved with the move.

Cheers

Terrific! This is a great idea and snipers the fundamental issue we all had with the previous forum platform.

Finally, an end to all those threads posted by users lamenting the lack of a poll functionality. Thrillingly jargon-free introduction, too. And certainly not an attempt to turn customers into data points for the marketing department. That would be naughty.

Absolutely nothing bad can come of this. I'm pumped. How pumped am I? Why not use the Insta-slider below to indicate your opinion of my pumped-ness?

I remember with fondness the 2016 Poll that artificially transmuted complex issues into simple binaries in order to determine a collective future direction and we're certainly living in a more 'dynamic community' as a result.

[@mention:1566878603942595], Will archived profiles still be visible on the archived old forum? If not, then advice to members to copy anything they wish from their profiles before the changeover might be appreciated by those with some detail in there (provided up to date!).

Posted on: 14 January 2019 by Richard Dane

IB, from what i understand from Naim it's only old posts and threads that will be archived, not profiles - all user data other than posts will be deleted. Obviously if there's any info in your profile that you wish to copy, then now is the time to do so.

Unlike in music, sometimes less dynamism is better!

Richard,

Will exsisting posts like The football season in the padded cell be there with the new forum or do we have to start it all again.

If I don't come back - Thanks so much for your moderation here and as you once said it's like a very civilised members club or was .

Cheers Ian
