What is the latest music you downloaded, what resolution and from where?

Posted by: Stevee_S on 13 January 2014

With more music being downloaded I thought it might be interesting to see what forum members are buying and from where.

The news that HD Tracks are soon to open an online UK store means that more choice is going to be available to us. The variety and quality of downloadable music we can choose from is expanding, MP3 to 24bit studio Masters at 192kHz and beyond.

So what are you buying and downloading?

Yes I will when I have all listened to them. It looks like it's quite different. So not all gold.

As far as I recall the 1977 Oakland Floyd show is an audience recording albeit recorded from in front of the sound desk and later transferred from analog cassettes (TDK SA) firstly to 1-bit 5.6448 MHz DSF and then to 24bit 96kHz PCM (wav).

Is there a 24/96 version available on the Bandcamp site or is it only available in redbook?

I downloaded this one today from Bandcamp. I have a number of other Led Zep live soundboard recordings including Blasphemy, Baton Rouge, Mobile Al, and the SQ of this one is right up there with the best of them.

I've now played a few tracks of this download and it's very good. There's very good stereo imagery with this recording.

I've had chance tto listen to all the Led Zep boots and the New York 75 and Royal Albert Hall 70 are the cream of the bunch for SQ, the RAH 70 being the best of all.

I haven't hear them all, but I guess that's why those two are specifically showing up on a lot of peoples list and the others you see less. Then again great to have them as a document.

It's a pity that Heartbreaker, Thank You and SIBLY are still missing from the RAH album.

Here's a handy link for info on LZ live recordings:

Thanks for that Steve, I look forward to getting around to listening to them. These LZ and 'Floyd live recordings all seem to have been put together and 'remastered' by Chris Montgomery and sold through Bandcamp, so far the SQ has been surprisingly good.

sjbabbey thank you for the link for LZ live recordings.

The Southampton Uni Refectory 1973 bootleg is definitely worth getting if it becomes available.

Queen ~ Champions of The World

Bancamp Flac and MP3 320

Unsure as yet where the live venue was or the year. It might just be a rip from a 1995 documentary.

Gary, I listened to this one late last night and it was a great gig, the sound quality really is surprisingly very good. So I agree with Steve J's review. I can't speak for any of the others just yet but this RAH 1970 is the best live recording I have heard from them. I see that you have bought it for yourself now so it will be interesting if you agree.

This one is indeed realy good - had this morning a listen to the Capital 77, this one was less airy and not as good. But still good enough to have an enjoyable experience.

I listened to this one a few weeks ago. Two BBC sessions, both in front of live audiences and compared by John Peel. Great sound quality and great music from PF, over 2 hours of really well recorded music and highly recommended. It was interesting to note that JP always introduced them as The Pink Floyd...

Jsut finalized the download from the Society of Sound B&W all 24 bit, most probably between 48-96KHZ (not yet reviewed), I will throw them on my NAS this evening...

Can I just say, to everyone buying these Zep/Floyd boots by "Liquid Motion" from Bandcamp - and this is not a moral judgement, just a practical one: I know $1 isn't much, but you can actually get them for nothing from Dime, Traders' Den, Lossless Legs and other BitTorrent sites, and often in better quality.

This is because it is very bad form among tapers/collectors to sell anything or to pay for live recordings (don't forget, not a penny from those Bandcamp sales go to the artists), but only to share them. The series BT sites also provide detailed provenance and Md5 files so you know just what you're getting. (The trading scene also frowns on encoding to any lossless format). Where something has been "mastered" you're told exactly what's been done, and by whom; and if you don't like the "improvements" there is always a "raw" version available.

For example, the LZ Albert Hall show is just taken from Dick Carruthers' DVD soundtrack, and the Floyd 70 - 71 boot is available in (believe it or not) even better quality, for nada.

A lot of the Floyd boots look like rip-offs of the Harvested releases (including the BBC one mentioned above) which are usually shared freely on the Y! forum.

Many thanks for the heads up Kevin and sjbabbey, I was totally unaware that this is the case with these particular downloads. I will now be pointing my browser elsewhere the next time that I'm looking for these type of boots.

I wish I'd know of the links to the Led Zep boots before.  No great loss.

'Tis a shame, I thought this was legitimate like spotify. Have only bought one and paid all of double!! Don't think I'll get any more if the artist gets nothing.
