What is the latest music you downloaded, what resolution and from where?

Posted by: Stevee_S on 13 January 2014

With more music being downloaded I thought it might be interesting to see what forum members are buying and from where.

The news that HD Tracks are soon to open an online UK store means that more choice is going to be available to us. The variety and quality of downloadable music we can choose from is expanding, MP3 to 24bit studio Masters at 192kHz and beyond.

So what are you buying and downloading?

Assembly Of Dust - Live At Milestones Rochester 2002

This is an Internet Archive recording, approved by the band.

AoD are a combination of Americana and Jam Band that freely encourage audience recordings and this is an excellent, CD quality soundboard download, available as a FLAC.

They write great songs and stretch them out to just the right length with ace guitar and keyboard jams - there's very little pointless noodling.

There are zillions to chose from, this is relatively early. Here's a video from a couple of years ago of one of the tracks on the above setlist: Speculator

Romanian stoner rock. Heard some on Stuart Maconie's Freak Zone last week (from the album Love, Fear, Choices and Astronauts) and liked it but getting their official albums is pricey, so this Bandcamp demo disc will do until I can snag the proper ones cheaper.

Bandcamp

That has gone straight into the wishlist for the next time I am doing some downloading. Definitely getting into the stoner rock genre.

36 - Subscription

Firstly, apologies to anyone following me - you'll be sent a huge email list of updates!

36 is an ambient/space artist who I stumbled across on Bandcamp and fell in love with. Problem was, there was a lot of it and what to choose.

The answer was to subscribe to him. For £20 (renewable yearly) you get everything he releases for the next year plus all his back catalogue - which has promptly landed on my Collection page!

Subscription details

I've downloaded the latest two - Sine Dust and Sine Dust Variations. I think they're lovely - spacey and yet melodic. Both are 24/44

Blanck Mass - Dumb Flesh

Half of F*ck Buttons. Punchier and more aggressive than the first Blanck Mass album yet still accessible, but not as in-your-face as FB. Very good indeed.

Moonweevil - A Peculiar Accumulation Of Particles

A rather charming, slightly psychedelic instrumental from a member of Cranium Pie (of Amorphous Androgynous mix albums fame). Only 35 minutes, but there again only $4

Nick can you point me at one of their better albums so I can make a start in "discovering" them...

So will try to give you a balanced answer, I had a listen again to this album.

First off I am not into forte piano. I prefer to listen to the normal piano and only like the piano forte in the context of music which is played within a convined  dynamic context.

for this album, not everything falls in that confined context. Where it does the playing is refined and gives you a feeling how it might have been intended and you understand the pieces in a different way. So for me it's an enrichment while I will put on 9 times normal piano and only 1 time forte piano. As I am a bad reviewer of such an album given my preference for normal piano, I would like to refor you to some of the reviews it there which in general are very positive. Hope this helps you a little bit.

Emmylou and Rodney Crowell, The Travelling Kind from Qobuz, at 88/24. Very entertaining, they were obviously having fun! Decided on Qobuz because they offered the booklet as well.

Had to use my laptop to read the booklet while I was commanding the NDS from my IPad. Is there sorme way to read the booklet on IPad while listening?

More generally, could HDTracks not offer the chance to re-download, and to have booklets?

Hyperion in 16/44.1 FLAC

This (for me) is an incredible find, the power of the poetry and voice transcend the nearly 8 centuries when it was first sung and played.

I would recommend that anyone listening to the samples on the Hyperion website for the first time also open the translations of the lyrics to read the poetry / translation from the old Spanish. Stunning and recommended.

"Maria Kiek's voice ranges from the hypnotic to the 'hairs on the back of the neck' to heart rending. The music just sounds so ancient, almost alien, but it seems to connect with something inside the heart and leaves one yearning for something indescribable".
