Cable dressing : a necessary puzzle to solve?
Posted by: TomSer on 26 March 2018
Do you spend time and brain cycles with cables dressing?
Does it make a difference in terms of sound?
For those owning a NAC252, did you make specific tweaks?
If so, what exactly did you do and did you notice a difference?
(I read once or twice that the 252 seams to needs special care)
In my case the cable dressing was quite a puzzle!
I have a total of 7 boxes in one rack.
I built a curved aluminium structure to which I attached all the cables. The idea was to be able to move the rack without moving the cables (preventing mechanical stress).
All the cables have two or more foam rings which are attached to the aluminium structure.
The result is:
- There is no vertical mechanical stress between cables and connectors
- Cables never touch directly the rack or aluminium structure
- Cables never touch each other
- Cables never touch the floor (except for power cables and NACA5)
- Cables are never parallel (except power cables)
Below 2 pictures (some others in my profile)
Very neat Tomser. The only tweaky thing I found when owning a 252 (apart from keeping it away from power supplies as you would do with any Naim Preamp) is to run the Burndy and the digital supply Snaic ( that connect the 252 to the Supercap) close together.

Do like your speaker cable looping. You have inspired me to copy your fine example. Just trying to decide if I prefer your more bulbous loops on the left or the compact on the right. Thanks for sharing.
Looping "fire cracker" style is Naim's recommendation for dealing with excess cable length. Tomser's cabling looks very neat!

I have a NDS/555DR/252/SuperCapDR/250DR. As James mentions, the only cables that should be run close together are the Snaic and Burndy exiting the 252. See Adam's link to Naim's recommendations above. Some say these should even be loosely twisted around each other over their length without of course stressing them. Others say just run them close together.
I have used the foam hoops (cut up pipe insulation in my case) the same as you to keep cables apart and off the floor and not touching walls but these all hang loose with all cables running through the hole of the foam hoop and I do not use cable ties. I realise you have used cable ties so you can move the rack without unplugging and replugging cables. My view is that cable ties could add some stress to cables as inevitably using them will divert cables from their natural resting position.
But this is being stupidly picky and I think you have done a fine job with your cable dressing. Just get those Snaic & Burndy cables running close together and watch out for signs of audio nervosa!
Lovely room too Tomser. The little chair for your listening companion is very sweet.

All that trouble and then putting the rack BETWEEN the speakers?
It looks like you could improve things even more by shifting it to the side.
Nice room BTW.
Impressive cabling and room Tomser. I must confess that my cabling is much less tidy! 252/300 is a natural sweet spot in the World of Naim. In an ideal world the rack should be to the side. I don’t have room to do this myself but if you could accommodate it you should hear improvements. Otherwise, sit back and enjoy.
Where do you put your wine glass?
Stu
Where can one find the picture of a certain Suffolkite's system and the cables behind it????
Oh no! I fort you was my pal!
I just let it all hang loose
Does anyone have any advice / opinions on running speaker cable (unsheilded) side by side over a few meters?

Yes - don't worry about it.

Yup, I do this, as do probably many others who try to keep the kit away from between the speakers. It's fine. Don't worry about it.

Oh dear, I was somewhat bored earlier, so powered down the 552, and did the "loosely twisted" thing, and blimey, it does make a difference .............. either that or I've got an over active imagination, and am easily led.
The fun simply never stops, does it?
I will be ashemed to put my cable pictures in here...
you can do this as professional cable organizer

Just wondering if your solution when sometime later striping down and cleaning will make things more easier or more difficult ?

And presumably the same applies to the 552?
Phil
It does.
The only things I do is gently massage the burndies every 6 months and make sure the 252 burndie touches nothing else. Have cable tied my snaic to burndie for the 252.

Would anyone have an explanation to that (or at least the advice to run burndy and snaic close to each other)? Indeed this helps cable dressing, so if it can improve (or not degrade) sound at the same time, that's a go.
Alba, yes, run the SNAIC 5 and Burndy cables parallel alongside one another as closely as possible. If need be, one turn of the SNAIC5 over the Burndy cable is OK if it makes this easier to achieve. Binding the SNAIC5 around the Burndy cable with multiple turns should be avoided.
Thanks, I'll try that just to make my own opinion.

I spotted the Nordic Light Candleholder, the best designed holder ever. I'm open for better suggestions.
