Erotic music

Posted by: Innocent Bystander on 06 July 2018

Some music is written to be erotic, i.e. to conjure erotic images or thoughts or feelings. Three that immediately come to mind are:

Je t’aime (or rather Je t’aime ...moi non plus to give it its full name), a single released by Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg, famously banned from airplay by the BBC, thus promoting greater public interest.

Erotica from the album Revelation by Man

My game of loving from An Electric Storm by White Noise

One thing these three have in common is what is politely called ‘heavy breathing’. And, curiously, all hail from 1969 - there must have been something in the air! (Maybe that was what made Randy Newman write the song with that name, released that year...!)

Other music might not have been written to be erotic, though has popularly been considered to be, or has been made to be by association such as through its use in a popular film - Ravel’s Bolero comes to mind, brought to fame (notoriety?) by the film 10, with the Dudley Moore and Bo Derek characters making love to its rhythm.

There must be loads more out there, so any contributions (with explanations as to why erotic if not immediately evident)?

Well I quite enjoy some of the Lounge Jazz that was composed for sound tracks for the German Erotic film industry ... composers and artists such as Gerry Hayes, Peter Thomas, Erwin Halletz etc...

Two pieces spring to mind.

The overture to the first act of Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss, which is a fairly graphic description of the previous nights entertainment between the Marschallin and her rather over eager young lover, Octavian.

The other is the extraordinary passionate second act love duet in Tristan und Isolde, which ends in a rather abrupt coitus interruptus, when the lovers are discovered by King Mark.

There some pretty erotic early US House tunes whose lyrics I won’t repeat because they don’t exactly conjure up the erotic they spell it out loud and clear ditto Jamaican dancehall.

And most of Teddy Pendergrass, Marvin Gaye and Barry White is pretty erotic ????

Quite an - er - interesting album, that one.  Not listened to it in years, but fond memories.

Surely it has to be Donna Summer's "Love to Love you, Baby".

From Wikipedia:

A tape of the song was sent to Casablanca Records president Neil Bogart in the U.S., and he played it at a party at his home. Impressed with the track, Bogart continued to play it over and over all night. He later contacted Moroder and suggested that he make the track longer - possibly as long as 20 minutes. However, Summer again had reservations; she wasn't sure of all of the lyrics. Nevertheless, she imagined herself as an actress (namely Marilyn Monroe)[3] playing the part of someone in sexual ecstasy. The studio lights were dimmed so that Summer was more or less in complete darkness as she lay on the floor.

The final recording lasted over 16 minutes, and according to the BBC, contained 23 "orgasms".[3] By that point, the song was renamed "Love to Love You Baby". It took up the entire first side of the album of the same name, and edited versions were also found on 7" vinyl.

Possibly, however apparently according to an interview I saw of her she was rather upset how she ended up sounding on that recording... where she was a little over egged as it were... but I couldn’t help feeling well what did you expect.....

The original “orgy” sounds were made by the group in the studios (including Delia Derbyshire), but David Vorhaus deemed them unsatisfactory  so he went out to an actual orgy with his trusty tape recorder.

Those 60s...

Done purely in the interest of collecting the sound...

Of course, those days you could just pop round anywhere to find an orgy! (Sadly I was only 15 at the time, and didn’t move in the right circles...

'right in time' by Lucinda Williams   from 'car wheels on a gravel road' the sexual yearning is overwhelming

These aren't subtle...

Just because it happens to be playing right now, Darling Nikki on Prince's Purple Rain?

Duran Duran - Bedroom Toys from their 2004 Astronaut album - yikes is it that old!

I will think of some more refined music later!

In one of those regular top ten, top one hundred, surveys popular in the music press of the time, sexiest instrumental went to Santana - Samba Pa Ti.

Then as a sixth former I remember the Bristol Hippodrome putting on an affordable opera season, during the orgy scene in Tales of Hoffman someone in our group says out loud "I've been to parties like that." Fortunately, we were quick enough as everyone in front turned round, to turn and look at the row behind us!

Big Love - Fleetwood Mac

The Great Gig in the Sky - Pink Floyd

The End of the Innocence - Don Henley

And I'm sure there's something from Tristan...

Was that a pun or a Freudian slip ?

Freudian slip, and bad memory! It was of course by Thunderclap Newman, as i have just reminded myself, Randy being an unrelated singer!

I’m not much of a classical music guy, but surely Ravel’s Boléro deserves mention.

Sibelius Violin Concerto, 2nd movement, Adagio. I’ve always thought that the the entire movement is a perfect depiction of intense, involved, passionate lovemaking. Especially this performance. See if you might agree.

Schubert's Gretchen am Spinnrade! Several great recordings, but I have to single out Jessye Norman's 1984 recording for Philips and, more girlish, Carolyn Sampson on her recent album for Bis. Both are intense, but not over the top. I also have a soft spot for the more intimate, sombre, Bernarda Fink.

Nine Inch Nails - Closer

DiVinyls - I Touch Myself

Mazzy Star - Fade Into You

The Tubes - several songs, more so for lyrics than the music

One I remember is Meatloaf, from the bat out of hell album, and is of course, Paradise by the Dashboard light.

Maybe not erotic, but one of the most beautiful love songs (IMV) is Porpoise Mouth, by Country Joe and the Fish.

At last I remembered what  I had been looking for - two tracks by Mary Coughlin from the album Tired and Emotional, for the story line The Beach, but sheer sultry emotion, listen to Seduced.
