Nice Photos.

Most of us have taken one or two nice photos.

Here is my candidate as being almost quite good. In fact it is two painstakingly joined.

Taken up in the mountain at Skurdalsvatn in 2000.

Though this one takien in Warsaw in November 2006 is not bad:

I know there are several good photgraphers here, and it would be nice to see some of you best efforts if you feel inclined to share!

Go.

It's an upper quadrant signal. Up means go, horizontal means stop.

Owl in the Daytime

Posted on: 05 December 2012 by rodwsmith

I love owls. Stupid factoid for you...

"Owl" is one of not-very-many words in English for which there are two French words: Hibou and Chouette.

It depends on whether they have visible 'ears' (actually the tufted feathers, or aigrettes, resembling ears) (A hibou does and a chouette doesn't).

Every edition of the Oxford Hachette English-French dictionary ever printed has this the wrong way round!

Most owls without visible ears are Barn Owls, which in French are "Chouettes effraies" which literally means 'scary owls'. They often fly over little countryside roads during the night, and people used to believe they were ghosts, because of their white faces and bellies.

(Harfang is a synonym for Snowy Owl in both languages)

Sorry. I really should get out more.
