Most of us have taken one or two nice photos.
Here is my candidate as being almost quite good. In fact it is two painstakingly joined.
Taken up in the mountain at Skurdalsvatn in 2000.
Though this one takien in Warsaw in November 2006 is not bad:
I know there are several good photgraphers here, and it would be nice to see some of you best efforts if you feel inclined to share!

As a long time Photoshop Nut, I found it easy.
I'm using Pshotoshop Elements ATM, which is the amateur version of PS. Its OK for quick fixing of pictures.
For your picture, I used the auto settings for colour and contrast. Nothing fancy.
If you use www.photobucket.com , there is a photo edit option there that's doing about the same as Photoshop.
Your picture fixed by
1. Photoshop Elements
2. Editor in photobucket

Im not gonna do nothing, but the photo makes me visit Italy.
(The colours are almost "burned" out in the green areas. They could be a little lighter. And it's not alwyas good to cut a photo in two parts(land and sky) like you have done. )
But I'm no specialist either.

The problem with the auto features of photo editing softwares is that they average the levels and usually produce awful results, no better than the original.
I find the "fixed" squirrel image far too contrasty, too dark and too cold.
This looks better to me on my screen.

The following link is to a largeish file so if you are not on broadband do not go there.
It shows a Mocking bird breaking into an Albatross egg and eating the contents

Last night they said on the 'one'show it's Dragonfly time. So right on cue this guy turned up....
He's quite big, about 2 inches long, but it's those amazing gossamer wings that get me.

Big Howard,
I adjusted input levels in "levels". The mid gets the most adjustment. Once the levels are adjusted you will need to adjust saturation. I increased contrast very slightly. I also added a small amount of 81 warming filter in "Photo filter".
These are all available in the full Photoshop CS3,CS2,8,7,6, etc...

Do you line-up your monitor before you make the adjustments count?

Is there some sort of halfway house between the automatic Photobucket and the PS type programmes, some thing for a tyro/amateur?

Photoshop Elements or Paintshop Pro are popular at, I think, £60 to £80 a pop. Or of course there are a few freeware apps available, for example http://www.gimp.org/. Never tried any of the above, BTW.

Some usefull help on monitor calibration, this should be done after the computer/monitor have been on for at least 20mins.

I took this tonight in the field opposite the hoose as the farmer finally got a serviceable combine AND the weather at the same time:
