Nice Photos.

Most of us have taken one or two nice photos.

Here is my candidate as being almost quite good. In fact it is two painstakingly joined.

Taken up in the mountain at Skurdalsvatn in 2000.

Though this one takien in Warsaw in November 2006 is not bad:

I know there are several good photgraphers here, and it would be nice to see some of you best efforts if you feel inclined to share!

I love this shot. Can you elaborate on the technical details - especially how you got the colours?

The UTC (Universal Tone Control) is a powerful equaliser unit.Developed in the 1950s by EMI's  technicians, it received the nickname 'the Curve Bender' for its ability to shape a sound. At a time when most equalizer devices were simple affairs, this was a complex and very flexible tool.

Built to military standards, the UTC is considered betterr quality than almost any studio equaliser unit produced today. The original specification states, “one of nearly 14 million pre-determined frequency response curves can be selected at will”. And that was just for the mono version!

Yet another example of EMI's in-house brilliance. How the mighty have fallen!

What a beaut! These Swiss-built Studer J37 four-track machines were workhorses at Abbey Road throughout the 1960s. The Beatles used J37s extensively. There are a number at the studios still working!

This example, Machine No.1, was used from 1964 until 1972 in Studio 2. I think it was used to record at least part of "Sgt Pepper".

"Jamie I love this shot. Can you elaborate on the technical details - especially how you got the colours? Steve"

Thanks Steve

It was a very flat light/sky and unsurprisingly the pic was a bit flat too. Intended to make it (and others of the empty fairground) B&W but I've been going the other way recently and putting more colours in! It's mainly a series of grad filters through Lightroom,

EMI’s Recording Engineer Development Department (REDD) was established in 1955 by Abbey Road Studios technical engineer Lenn Page to address the needs of the then-new stereo format.

Within a year, the team’s efforts had led to the production of the REDD.1 console, Abbey Road's first dedicated stereo mixing system, which consisted of a REDD.8 mixer and a rack that housed its amplifiers and other components.

In 1957, its successor was created: The REDD.17, designed by Peter Burkowitz of EMI’s German affiliate EMI Electrola; it was one of the first desks, with EQ on each of its eight channels. Like the REDD.1 it was both monophonic and stereophonic. This is one at Abbey Road, from 1957.

Yes, indeed. One of my neighbour's girls and such a cherub. My camera is being repaired so I used another neighbour's ancient digital camera which has a 50mm lens (never used one before) to take a birthday pic. I wanted to emphasize her eyes so I played around with the image using Picasa3. I have no idea if this version is better than the original or even if the original would be considered a good photo but I like the result - it works for me although I have a friend who is a semi-pro photographer who is always telling me my pics are crap so what do I know?. This photo draws me in and I think about her future - She will probably have 2 kids by the time she is 19 and be married to a semi-illiterate drunk who works irregularly as a boat man and spends most of his pitifully low wages on cigarettes, alcohol and cock fighting.

This very instrument - a Schiedmayer celeste - was used by Rick Wright on the intro to "Time" on Pink Floyd's classic "Dark Side of the Moon".

The Beatles (or rather George Martin) also used it on "Baby It's You" and "Good Night".

Sniper.

A similar fate awaits a lot of girls brought up in inner city Britain.

Photo looks great to me, but I'm definitely no expert. The important thing is you're happy with the results. Ask your friend why he's only a semi pro.

Have you discovered the "I'm feeling lucky" button in Picasa. It alters a number of parameter to what it thinks is correct. I only discovered it a couple of months ago, now I give it a try with every photo I edit. Particularly useful for correcting white balance and brightening up underexposed images.
