What are the best Concerts you ever attended?
Posted by: Rich Jerskey on 26 October 2003
Okay, here they are for me (not counting Classical). What about you?
in no particular order:.......
Jeff Beck Group with Rod Stewart (Rod's first gig in USA) at Hunter College, NYC late 60's
Pharoah Sanders and Leon Thomas in a small club in S.F. 1974
The Doors at Hunter College and the Filmore East in NYC 1968.
Concert for Bangladesh Madison Sq. Garden, NYC
Big Brother and the Holding Co with Janis Joplin, Crawdaddy Theater in NYC
Rolling Stones Honolulu Civic Auditorium. Hawaii early 70's
Santana and Buddy Miles at Diamond Head Crater Festival in Hawaii New Years Day 1972
Jimi Hendrix at M.S.G. 1969
Traffic at the Filmore East
Jefferson Airplane/Hot Tuna Filmore East
Grateful Dead Winterland S.F. 1974
Blues Project, Central Park (their last concert)
Van Morrison Universal Ampitheater, L.A.
Jimmy Cliff Hollwood Bowl
Peter Tosh Univ of Wisconsin - Madison
Joni Mitchell Madison, WI
Junior Wells at B.L.U.E.S. in Chicago
Magic Slim at Just Blues in Chicago (same night as Junior)
Santana in Milwaukee WI.
Kinks in Chicago in 70's
and no doubt quite a bit more but that's what immediately comes to mind in a free association type of thing. oh yeah, can't forget Procol Harum and Jethro Tull at Filmore East. Getting carried away....someone reel me in...

Fell asleep !!!!

Tangerine Dream as you say (in our opinions) are exceptionally boring and they're still going strong, based in Spandau in an old Cinema come disco, on the outskirts of Berlin. Strangely enough as far as I'm concerned at least they represent the most famous German band (World-Wide)of all time, pretty innovative stuff for their day. Scorpions are half Dutch, and sing in English, Nina a one hit wonder, and Boney M, well ?

PissĀ² As a poser, I did love watching "The hot House Flowers" play at Subaco
Stadium in Perth WA, accommpannyied by some geezers from up Norf, Dire
Straits or somethinmg, though the booze free clause was a bit of a late
shocker, as we were all well stocked up, and had to drink fast or bin it
all before going in. Eagles at Wembley-Arena (H California) was a very close second/third for quality though, innit.

L Z at Knebworth '79 always stands out.
Rush at Hammersmith Odeon and Springsteen at Brighton were standouts as well.

YOU LUCKY LUCKY LUCKY LUCKY GET YOU!!!! I'd give both my arms to have seen the Doors for real in the 60s. Ditto Hendrix...
Right - my listing is a lot smaller since I haven't been to many big league gigs...
*Jimmy Cliff - Saturday, Glastonbury 2003 (amazing)
*Arthur Lee (and what passes for Love) - when was it - not sure I have my mind! - Saturday Glastonbury 2003/Bristol 3/9/2002
*REM - Friday, Glastonbury 2003 (as good as 1995)
*Cosmosis/X Dream - Rex, London 19/10/2002 (mindblowing - the whole package)
*Infected Mushroom - Astral Phoenix, Rex, London 5/10/2002 (my first rave - what a baptism of fire!!!!)
*The L.A. Doors - Alleycat Live, Reading 1996 (as near as you'll get to the real thing, and totally cool - oh, and our band headlined here once too, but we were crap!)
*Oasis - Knebworth 1996 (Oasis were crap as usual, but the Prodigy/Chemical Brothers/Bootleg Beatles were ace
*Carter USM - Reading Uni Great Hall, 11/1995 (sweat rained from the ceiling, but it was good)
*REM etc - Cardiff Arms Park, 1995 - blinding - totally blinding
*Panterra - Plymouth Pavillions, 1994ish (insane - glad we got the seats!)

- LA Doors, twice in Edinburgh at the Venue.
- Stereolab at the Garage in Glasgow, when they were all still alive.
I'd love to see Kenny Ball & His Jazzmen.

When I saw the BBs, they had the 'full' line-up - including Brian, Dennis and Bruce. Brian wasn't quite back yet though!
The other ones I forgot were the Byrds, also Bristol 1971, and the Allmans at Knebworth 1974.
Biggest misses were Traffic and the Who. I could have seen the Beatles in 1964 but a little too young!!!

Roxy Music on For Your Pleasure tour in '73,
Supertramp followed by Yes at Reading '75 (in the rain - it was magical, but would you let your 15 year old kid just take off for a festival weekend on their own? - I wouldn't!), Neil Young - every time, but especially at Pheonix Festival, Smashing Pumpkins last ever tour, Soundgarden every time at Brixton, Foo Fighters at Brixton when Pat Smear was with them (twice), Pink Floyd London Division Bell tour. Sigur Ros at Albert Hall last year, Sisters of Mercy at Albert Hall, Bauhaus early 80's in Brighton. Nick Cave '97 - but only because of the Australian girl I was with.

Chris,
Who was with the Byrds when you saw them? I saw them when Clarence White was in the band (also at the Fillmore - I used to go almost every weekend for awhile). I regret not having seen the original Allmans but I did see Dicky Betts' Band once in N.J. ..... good but not the Allmans by any means.

Rich,
McGuinn, White, Battin and Guerin I'm pretty sure. The 'Untitled' line-up. Rita Coolidge was the support act (quite memorable!)
Saw Chris Hillman recently in the UK but sadly never Manassas, which would have been amazing.

Wow, Rita Coolidge, huh? Good show, that!
The "Untitled", that must've been the same lineup I saw in NYC, great!
I saw Chris Hillman in Glasgow in '99 when I was there for a convention. He was very good.

How was Ry Cooder? I saw him in Hollywood doing a benefit with his band at the time "Get Rhythym". He had actor Harry Dean Stanton sing a few. very cool.

He was great - as was Harry Dean Stanton, who sang a Mexican lament, to the puzzlement of the audience. HDS was never identified; not too many people in Glasgow are Hispanic; and all this on top of Ry Cooder telling us it was a non-smoking gig, which as unheard of at the time.

Aw crap - forgot about that one - they were excellent and a fitting end to the festivities! Garbage weren't too bad either...
In 24 hour party people, is that THE Reading 1998 footage they use for the clip of New Order playing live??
