HDX

Will it transmit Internet radio stations via broadband/ethernet WITHOUT having to connect to a PC?

Ok, so it's a Naim HDD player based upon the NS03 then ? At £4500, it's a bit more expensive than the NS03 too.

Same price as NS03, by my reckoning.

Guess the next questions are, does it support UPnP AV on the ethernet connection ?

No, uses NetStreams' StreamNet technology as used in the DigiLinX (and NaimNet) products–this provides much more robust performance than uPnP, sorry.

and, can it stream other multiple sources out it's ethernet ?

Six streams over ethernet on DigiLinX / NaimNet network....

The Linn servers are using UPnP technology, which is open source. Am I able to interoperate with this ? or, is this proprietary technology that will not interoperate with something else ?

Can I backup the internal HDD's off box ?

Roy.

£4500 !!!! You could build a vastly superior pc based system for a lot less than that !

But as it's NAIM it will probably sell, and give NAIM a presence in the future.

Now I am thinking of holding my CD5X purchase.

I wonder if it is close to the performance of a CD5X, or a CDX2?

I think this gives a clue to the sonic performance of HDX ...

Notes for Editors from Naim HDX Press Release:
An ideal combination would be Naim's award-winning SuperNait amplifier and N series loudspeakers. Two discreet loudspeakers and a stylish subwoofer can deliver the sort of accuracy of performance that has to be heard to be believed. This system takes up little space, is visually attractive in an understated way but can deliver excitement and emotion in a way that only a great music system can.

"stand alone CD player upgradeable with XPS2/555PS"
1)Performance akin to which CD player in the existing lineup? Can I ditch my CDS3/555PS?

"plays music already existing on the network"
2)Which file formats? Apple Lossless? AIFF? FLAC? MP3? AAC?

"managed from your laptop"
3) Mac?

4)When ripping using the internal HDX drive how can one tag the files on esoteric CD's which are not listed in the online database which Naim are utilizing? The rips on the internal drive are only .wav?

Thanks

A very elegant solution to the evolution of CD playback and the onset of stored instant access music! Very impressive - but kinda pricey Eek

I wonder how it would compare in sound quality with a MacBook / PC and stand alone DAC for around a third of the price Eek

I still like it a lot tho!

Another beautiful black box. I want one of these with a Supernait. Any ideas when we can start placing orders?

don't think so. my dealer just told me hdx/xps2 compares to cdx2/xps2.

as i read some time ago on a naimnet thread you can access/change the information via web interface and there's a mp3 version stored for easy ipod syncing. i assume this applies to the hdx too.

can't wait for a manual to be available for download...

Full points for enthusiasm Andrew,
but as this will cost you £6850 you might want to listen to it first;
you might not like it!

Ouch, I thought it costs $4000? Still a lot of money mind you.

Good news I would say. Next thing is to get and listen to some music with one!

I thought the CDX2 was in a different class to an okay CD source through the supernait DAC. I assume most of that improvement is due to either a better DAC in the CDX2 and/or how it handles the output from the DAC through to the preamp.

Have I got that wrong and how I can get that kind of performance via my PC?
Posted on: 24 April 2008 by AndrewK7
Sorry - your post is based on an incorrect price - see below.

Hello 555

£6850. does seem a high price to pay but I heard someone mention it would cost more than the CDX2 and sound just as good if not slightly better. Adding the musical character of the XPS2 too reflects that price. Naim have listened to it to evaluate the market. If it is as good as Naim say it is you pay about £900. extra for the HDX add functions as it is a CDP as well.
Naim may classify it as a series 5 item as it is by no means cheap and expensive.
You are right also, compare the HDX with XPS2 versus CDX2 with XPS2. But as they say 'be worthy of a good naim'.
This machine sets a new standard to a fairly new way to interpret music replay.
One other thing
Who owns the music. Copy right laws, etc.
Will we have to delete the music after a year from streamlining?

WARREN has a point. Spending £7K on a source. Does that work with SN. What do the Retailers think?
Posted on: 24 April 2008 by David Dever
£4500 is what I heard, including VAT.

YOU are entirely correct - £4,500 for the HDX.

Possibly Mr 555 had added on an amount for the SuperNait.

Hi Andrew

All good points & we agree, especially for copyright.
I think Naim will be employing a specialist legal eagle for this & licensing issues.

Don't forget to factor in 2nd hand, & ex' dem' bargains,
when you are doing your VFM calculations. Cool

Cheers - John

well, I was about to go down the road of Klimax DS, so should I pause?

Klimax DS vs HDX

Only one way to find out

And wait half a year?
No way!

You can get a NS4, Linn Sneaky DS or Akurate DS as interim.
Posted on: 24 April 2008 by gone
Yes, you're probably right, but I'm not sure an NS4 will do what I think I need. The HDX is attractive as it's an all-in-one, allowing me to rip my CDs to disk, and a built-in touch screen - I am afraid I am not interested in having separate screens in my relax space (apart from the main plasma). Even the DS AFAIK needs a separate LCD.
Also, I don't think I will go down the route of network music, at least not local.
But I have the impression it's not going to replace the CD555 as yet, quality-wise, and I'm sure there's an HD555 in the wings. And based on experience of the nVi, maybe it's best to wait until the bugs are sorted?
But interesting times indeed.

The HDX is what I have been dreaming for and more, it is capable of everything the Transporter does plus Hard disk and USB options. Still unclear are:

- Fomats support in addition to WAV. i.e. MP3 and lossless formats such as FLAC and APE

- File access via a PC (e.g. for song tagging etc.)

- Support for Internet radio

- Firmware updates for future applications e.g. Pandora, last.fm, DRM music download)

- Web based interface, preferrably customizable for different devices

I know this sounds like a Slimserver feature list, but they do have years of head start supported by an open source community.
Posted on: 24 April 2008 by JY
I also wonder if the LCD screen on the machine can be turned off. With 2 hard disks and all the computer circuitry built in to such a small space, noise must surely be an issue to deal with?

$9000 for a HD-based streamer???

I just find it odd that 400GB disks are being used.

I think it supports USB external hard disks and drives off the network?
Posted on: 24 April 2008 by Manu
A CD is about 650MB, so 400GB can hold about 600 CDs.
Posted on: 24 April 2008 by kuma
but then you need a back up drive in case of HD failure.
