As the original post is no more I thought I would start a new one.

Arrived today in the post:

Very nice.  You must have played it to test the SQ.

Hope to spin these during the holidays.

Well, I'm delighted to say that Cambridge has a new vinyl record store, supplemented upstairs by a lovely coffee (plus tea & home-made cake) shop.  It's called "Relevant Record Cafe", has been opened 2 weeks ago by 2 vinyl enthusiasts and stocks both new & used vinyl LPs.  More can be found on their website.  (Richard, I hope this announcement is okay).

Anyway, I thought I'd pop in for a look to see what they have in stock and came out with 3 albums:

First, Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street, the 2010 remastered version

Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street 2010

Apparently this is much better than the CD version, which is shrill, compressed & harsh.

Funnily enough, I would say exactly the same about the vinyl version.

A hearty recommendation to avoid, unless you like having your ears torn off.

If there is a half decent version of this album, please do let me know.

There has to be a better one than this.

Next up: more Rolling Stones but this time From the Vault: L.A. Forum 1975

It's a new 2014 release and contains 3 LPs + 1 DVD recording of their last LA concert of 1975, the year that Ronnie Wood joined.

Rolling Stones: From the Vault - L.A. Forum 1975

So what's it like? Absolute Dynamite!

Raw, dynamic drive, energy, rhythm and musicianship.

Such a relief & stark contrast to the other 'Stones album

Finally, the No. 1 album in the Rolling Stone Top 500 albums chart

(how ironic after 2 'Stones albums!)

The Beatles: Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

The new, 2014, analogue remastered, mono version

The Beatles: Sgt. Pepper 2014 mono

I won't comment on the music as this is known to be a classic.

However, the recording is simply brilliant.

It's by far the best sounding Beatles album that I own.  It just sounds natural and right.

Expensive but recommended.

Hugely encouraged by my last Music Matters 33rpm reissue experience.

Thanks for the info about the shop - I occasionally go to Cambridge so it's one to look out for.

I'm sorry you wasted your money on this version of Exile - I think it's generally regarded as poor on both vinyl and CD. I have heard this version and agree with you - it was passed on to me by someone who bought it and then got given the whole box. My fairly early but not original UK pressing sounds far better, though I don't think anyone would claim it's a hifi masterpiece. It is an essential Stones album so it is certainly worth tracking down a good copy. I assume that any pre-digital vinyl will sound better than what you have but I am not up to the ins and outs of the releases. The problem is that this is one of those early pressings that can become very pricey.

I have that version of exile too.

Isn't it amazing though however much you like an album if it sounds crappy it doesn't get a lot of plays.

My latest is Naim's Marc Ford offering Holy Ghost. Bought it on the offer. Great sounding slab of vinyl.

Exile - I have a first press 'value' cd, Dutch origin (CDCBS 450196 2) "2-record set on 1 compact disc" with a red spined jewelcase.

Although it has the infamous tape drop-out on 'Sweet Virginia' it's the best digital version I've heard/owned.

Thanks Graeme.

I'm not exactly dismayed, as the L.A. Forum concert from 1975 really captures the essence of what made the 'Stones such a brilliant live band.

The new ART speakers have finally come on song after circa 400 slightly shouty hours of running in and are now absolutely rocking.

I've just played:

  1. Led Zeppelin - Celebration Day, followed by
  2. Deep Purple - Made In Japan

2 fabulous concert albums, which just need to be played at 11/10.

It was so loud that the cooling fans on the NAP135s almost came on. Tinnitus has never sounded so good.

Best regards from a grinning FT

Ordered this a while back but wondering if it will ever come.  Was really looking forward to a Preludes on Vinyl (in addition to my Pollini)

Again, ordered a while back and have no idea when this will come.

There are two small pieces on this album that are worth a king's ransom for me and they are by Lera Auerbach.  I should actually buy a backup vinyl as I will be wearing those two tracks out for sure.

I, like Kuma, am rejoicing at the newer releases of vinyl (while still only very few).  This Duo album better not let me done.  If it is good qualitity I'm buying a second as this will be one of my favourite vinyls I'm sure as the four cello sonatas represent the core music I have personally been working on intimately with over the past couple of years.  A godsend on vinyl for me.
