What was the last vinyl you bought?
Posted by: apye! on 18 January 2011
Arrived today in the post:
The guy I bought this off has just delivered it. It's a first press of one of the very best albums of its era (if not all time), The Return of the Durutti Column by The Durutti Column, released on New Year's Eve 1979, and packaged in a sandpaper sleeve (later pressings were clothed in a more conventional Peter Saville-designed cover which used three Raoul Dufy paintings). The sleeves were assembled at Factory co-founder Alan Erasmus' flat by members of Joy Division and A Certain Ratio, working for pocket money.
There's a bit of a story behind this one - I bought this during the Easter holidays in 1980. It got nicked when I was a student, and have been meaning to get another one ever since, as it was the only significant gap in my Factory collection.
Anyway, last month I heard of a guy selling a copy so I went to go check it out. To my surprise the vinyl was pristine and the sandpaper sleeve, while starting to split at one of the seams, was also in incredibly good nick (ie the sandpaper hasn't disintegrated or come away from the cardboard backing). It got it for £180, which is very good, considering the fact that the last minty one of these I saw for sale went for £350.
Hi K, just seen this post well done sounds like you snagged a bargain If £180 can be called a bargain! Hope it plays well and you are enjoying it
Take care G.

Hello G - yes it plays like a dream. Even better than my 1982 Japanese press. I suppose at £180 it could said to be a bargain, being just 50% of the book price! But I had to have it as it was the missing jigsaw from the collection!
Hope all is well - do let me know next time you are here in The Smoke

Music Matters 33 1/3 reissues.
Matt,
What took you so long?
Saving money to blow on worthless items like a Kandid.
OK!
Kuma,
It was time and I am so pleased with the Kandid. One of the nicest upgrades in quite some time.
Matt
Matt,
I am not the least bit surprised at all.
I've a few Linn records from the past but they all sound sort of meh. This is from their latest vinyl release and I am curious to find out if it's any good.

Please let us know your opinion, Kuma
I have mixed feelings about Mozart's Requiem on vinyl, for some odd reason i preferred it on tape cassette, although this maybe because i find it good in the car, ...but no tape player in the car these days, and i used to listen to it at work with a Sony Walkman, a requiem for a mind bored to death in a dead end job, ...but now i'm happily retired and free to listen to happy music too.
So please tell us it's rubbish so i may save my money soul and sondek from depression
Thanks
Debs
Deb,
Which reading is your favourite Requiem?
This John Butt/Dunedin Consort set is a new edition of Süssmayr version so I am not sure what to expect of it.
My favourite vinyl Requiem are Marriner's (Beyer Edition), Karajan/Berliner albeit they are very different from one another.
And for CD, Gardiner, Herreweghe and the most recent Colin Davis/LSO set is just tremendous ( altho SACD/CD hybrid disc sounds less than ideal. I would love a good vinyl version of this reading )
Double 180g 45rpm album
180g mono version
Free 'Fire and Water' and The Killers 'Battle Born'. New TT arriving 27th July so looking forward to listening to them!

Kuma,
i'm still waiting to hear my fave Wolfy Requiem.
I was initiated on an LP copy of the terrific Rafael Brubeck de Burgos - New Philharmonia, and still have the fondness for it.
In the 1990s with my fabulous CDS player i acquired the superb philips Mozart Masses 9xCD box-set which was enlightening up to the day i lent it to a friend, who was rather ill at the time ...and subsequently died, so didn't get the chance to return it.
But i found many of Mozart's earlier masses to be equally as brilliant and as interesting on the ear as his Requiem - which in the the Philips boxset was Peter Scheier Staatstapelle Dresden iirc.
I have the [CD] Neville Marriner Beyer edition also, big thumbs up here : )
Also [tape cassette] Christopher Hogwood - Academy of Ancient Musik...
and one other noteworthy good effort imho is Jordi Savall - La Capella Reial de Catalunya
Apart from a few other un-noteworthy examples in my collection i've relatively listened to few examples.
In 1991, the bicentenary of Mozart's death, there were over 30 recordings of the Requiem in the CD catalogue, i wonder how many there are now...?

Debs,
Thanks for your reco. I will give Jordi Savall set a try. I have the Scheier set but it's not my fave.
A quick search into Arkiv Music yields that there are over 150 recording of Requiem. I am sure there are a few overlap however.
My first exposure to the Mozart's Requiem was Milos Forman's film 'Amadeus' in 1984. The dramatic scene with Salieri transcribing the Requiem from dying Mozart and that music moved me more than anything. Also the poignant last scene of Mozart's D minor Piano Concerto ( Romanze ) played by Imogen Cooper also gave me a lasting impression.
Fantasy Records is reissuing special Amadeus 3 LP set next month. I've no production details on this but I might pony up for one. I like Marriner's Beyer version but this later version also even more compelling. I think he's excellent throughout the film even without the help of *visuals* this soundtrack album held up very well.
Red Hot Chili Peppers. Mother's Milk. Sealed copy.

Kuma,
please try the Jordi version before buying - i doubt very much it will impress upon you. I enjoy the singers contribution, and find it technically well recorded, as much of JS's production's are, but overall his Mozart Requiem version is rather lame and may drive you bored rigor mortis stiff.
Jordi is a top job master at the ancient Euro and Oriental music but i can't rate him as a Mozartian.
I'm rather enjoying the delightful 1979 Hans Gillesberger version at the moment,
had forgot i purchased it a few years ago,
and not to mention it's meaningful depth of soul.

debs,
Thanks for the warning. They both are seem to be out of print so it would be difficult to source new CDs at a reasonable cost.
Speaking of low energy Requiem, Schreier set was like that, too. Out of *comfortable* Requiem, I like Karajan/BPO.
I haven't sampled too many but it seems more low involvement wall paper versions are common than high impact emotionally draining versions. ( makes sense. since the latter asks too much out of listeners )
Despite the label on the image from Amazon it is on vinyl, purchased at Barnes and Noble today.
A bargain from the Rover - £17:
An even bigger bargain from the River - 180g Rhino version, a mere £10, will replace my crappy mid-80s version:
I can highly recommend undergroundhiphop.com! They have all I want! And all on vinyl!
