Hank Mobley: Slice of the Top '66 recording
i normally do not like anything passed 62-63 but this release caught my *ears* with McCoy Tyner on a piano and Duke Pearson as an arranger.
This album was recorded in '66 but was not released till '79.
- Hank Mobley — tenor saxophone, arranger
- Kiane Zawadi — euphonium
- Howard Johnson — tuba
- James Spaulding — alto saxophone, flute
- Lee Morgan — trumpet
- McCoy Tyner — piano
- Bob Cranshaw — bass
- Billy Higgins — drums
- Duke Pearson — arranger
Very modern polished big band sound which isn't particularly my kind of sound but I think Pearson's arrangement gives it slightly more intimate lyrical view. Here, Tyner is absolutely on fire with the opening title Hank's Other Bag.

Mine arrived yesterday. Will give its spin later.
Arrived today from PledgeMusic - all analogue mastered from the original mono master tapes; looks a very nice set...
All of the original albums in The Kinks in Mono vinyl LP box set were cut by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Mastering, supervised by Andrew Sandoval, direct from the original UK Pye NPL analog mono masters. Only analog EQ was used in the process. The 1970 compilation album, The Kinks (Black Album), was recompiled from flat digital transfers of original analog masters, and was cut to match the original LP. First UK Pye pressings of all of the albums were used in comparison to tapes to insure period accuracy with level, track spacing and artwork.

Only just got around to playing The Wall and comparing to my other 100 copies. This 2016 pressing is very , very good. Way better than the 2011 pressing. Slightly warped both lps, but not a crackle anywhere, so I'll keep it. There is the very slightest hint of a "digital" edge to it, but God it sounds great.
Well, all flat, no marks and perfectly quiet pressings. It's a good start. And Dream of Sheep sounds very atmospheric, although I did jump up when it distorted at 1:24 mins. Relieved to find out that it's on the digital version too. Brings all the memories back. There's no one like her.
I distinctly remember Kate's voice being very powerful, clear and quite dominant at the show. On this recording, it's lost amongst a muddy midrange. Overall, it has deep bass, good dynamic range, beautifully edited, but as I say, shame about the midrange.
received today from the River: Neil Young - Massey Hall 1971
Limited edition (1000 copies). 2 LP + 40-page album, CD + download code. Beautiful.
This one from Pure Pleasure's 50% sale.
Reissue of the 1971 14-track stereo LP.

Moon Wiring Club - Exit Pantomime Control
For those (I'd guess 99%) of you to whom this lot are unknown, this is (approx) their 17th album of weird hauntological electronica. If that doesn't mean much to you, it's the best I can do to describe a mixture of sampling, radiophonics, and break beats that (and you'll have to trust me on this) really comes into its own after dark. Most of their work is very creepy. Comes with a 24/44 download code. Moon Wiring Club website.
MWC being what they are, they don't do normal promo videos, so this covers the simultaneous release of this and a triple CD of earlier unreleased stuff (see elsewhere).

Love Burton's take on "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet".
4-LP set recorded at acclaimed shows back in 2014.
I've been buying a fair bit of vinyl this year. Highlight was the Nitin Sawhney One Zero box - whatever you might think of the music, I just love the whole idea of this one - direct to disc on 5LPs at 45rpm. Madly wonderful. To pay my respect to the man I went to see his show at the RAH last month - brilliant!
So, at the end of the year my final vinyl purchases are courtesy of Gearbox records;
For any pure analogue vinyl fans who are unfamiliar with Gearbox records, check them out. You are in for a treat. What you have is all analogue mastering and cutting using Studer C37 and H37 tape machines, a Haeco Scully lathe with Westrex cutter and WE amps, and an ex-Decca tube mastering mixer desk.
A Joy Division Christmas for me...

Are you hinting they were over commercialized? Not sure what the comment means honestly. I perceive a lot of history around Joy Division and whatnot...but honestly I grew up in the 80s with New Order, Substance.
I've never really got into Joy Division, but could hear the similarities in the music, just more of a band feel and less electronic with Joy Division. I know at least one of them committed suicide but that usually does not have anything to do with my music selection. Its odd how I am completely blind and unknowing about some bands, but also good...because there is still a lot of music to be discovered now that I'm back into vinyl...music that was there all along but I never crossed paths with.
So without any knowledge of Joy Division or their history I just bought up some of their albums after hearing Incubation. Also like Atmosphere and No Love Lost.
Snaic, it's a reference to a 2005 Half Man Half Biscuit song from Achtung Bono. Although you can actually buy JD oven gloves now.
