What was the last vinyl you bought?
Posted by: apye! on 18 January 2011
Arrived today in the post:
I gave in, but please permit me ONE pre-Xmas extravagance:
The set was mastered by engineer Bob Ludwig. For the project he utilised Direct Stream Digital (DSD) transfers from the original master recordings, with a sampling rate of 2,822,400. Lacquer cutting for vinyl was performed at Abbey Road Studios by Alex Wharton and Sean Magee (who did the Beatles mono box).
Sixteen LPs in all (plus a download code):
1) The Rolling Stones (UK, 1964)
2) 12 X 5 (1964)
3) The Rolling Stones No. 2 (UK, 1965)
4) The Rolling Stones Now! (1965)
5) Out of Our Heads (US, 1965)
6) Out of Our Heads (UK, 1965)
7) December’s Children (And Everybody’s) (1965)
8) Aftermath (UK, 1966)
9) Aftermath (US, 1966)
10) Between the Buttons (UK, 1967)
11) Flowers (1967)
12) Their Satanic Majesties Request (1967)
13) Beggar’s Banquet (1968)
14) Let it Bleed (1969)
15) Stray Cats (a new 2-LP collection of single A & B sides plus EP tracks)
Seems like a very nice set, the reviews have been good and I look forward to diving in sometime in the next few days.

Nice one K. I keep looking longingly at this box might use Christmas as an excuse to pull the trigger myself.
You are going to have to strengthen your floor if you don't stop buying all these weighty box sets.
Hope you enjoy the Stones and have a Happy Peaceful Christmas.

Hi Kevin,
I do exactly the same thing each year, in the midst of spending on everyone else, I usually treat myself to something, and this year it was this box set.
So, there I was the other day, scribbling cards, and wrapping prezzies, with this as background music.
It's brilliant, the remastering has been done wonderfully, and the mono presentation is superb.
Brings back 1963 Dansette days .................. but in a good way, and recaptures the raw excitement I remember as a schoolboy.
It's all good.
(Quick edit : Mine's the CD boxset, ripped to WAV.)

Hi Dave
Am listening to Let It Bleed at the moment (my fave Stones LP). I know it's a fold-down rather than a true mono mix, but it does sound bluddy good. Will start tackling the LPs in order next...

Cheers Graham - yes all that weight is a worry!
Only listened to one LP so far, but it does seem bloomin' good.

Neil Young box set 8.5 -12. All these lps sound superb and better than the original USA pressings. They were all so good, I started listening to one last night and ended up listening to all 5. Late night.

It's a great line up of albums. I've got original (or at least early pressings) of the 8.5-12 set, so content to sit pat. I went for the previous LP box set Discs 5-8 to fill several gaps in my NY catalog and it was superb; pressings, packaging and sonics. The late night is completely understandable. Enjoy!

Some people say, including the band, that the album art was chosen by Curtis as a portend of his own imminent death.
Just got them today and cleaned and listened to the first vinyl in Substance...here are my thoughts on the vinyl as compared to digital I heard from Spotify:
Side A: Transmission was a great sounding song, and was so-so on digital from memory.
Side B: Incubation was one I liked on digital and liked on vinyl just as much, but Atmosphere actually brought the hairs standing up on my head and some moist eyes. Love will tear us apart had that New Order feel I grew up with in the 80s. As opposed to hearing Joy Division first and then New Order.
Just finished cleaning sides C and D.

I am not so keen on Substance.

And why shouldn't you? It's a very good album; possibly my favourite PF album. Although it might be equal favourite alongside Atom Heart Mother, Meddle, DSOTM, Animals, The Wall and The Final Cut!
Yes Relayer and Queen Greatest Hits Vol 1: remastered, heavy weight.
