Excellent 180 gram vinyl. Recorded straight to tape at the same concert as the renowned digital download;

''Carmen Sings the Blues'' which was recorded to multi-track DXD.

I won't say the vinyl is better or worse than the DXD file,  it is different it's analog , and an analog recording process.

Great album, but I don't understand that they did not use the same title as the hi-res download;" Carmen Sings the Blues''.

It is all about the Blues and has very little to do with Belafonte.

Debs,

It's a funny album is Deadwing and it really seems to divide opinion, musically.  I find it to be a mix of some really excellent tracks that just grow better with each listen and some fillers that don't hit the mark at all, pretty much for the reasons you state.

It is also odd in that the CD version has a really low DR rating but actually sounds pretty good on my NDS (proof IMO that DR ratings never tell the whole story about a recording).  Which is also why I was expecting the vinyl (as per the aforementioned blurb) to sound even better; which as you too have discovered it doesn't; at least in sonic terms.

Strangely, when I spoke to Burning Shed, they told me that they have had positive feedback about the SQ of the record.  I was beginning to think I must have cloth ears all of a sudden but thanks to you agreeing with my view, believe it may in fact be others who are so afflicted!

Regardless of musical content, and as Richard references in an earlier post, it is beyond belief that record companies can make such a mess of things in this day and age, especially at the price they are charging for new vinyl.

Cheers,

Ian

Apart from the fact that it's on the lousy K-Scope label, it is remastered by Steven Wilson - proving that he can't even do a decent job of remastering his own albums.

Probably because they see it as a different album and what to distance them self from the DXD recording. It is has been recorded with an analog signal chain straight to tape while the hi-res download has been recorded via the computer.

Nagra used the tape in Munich;

PT’s brilliant 2005 release now reissued on Kscope.

The album has been remastered by Steven Wilson and the 2017 master has features noticeably less compression and limiting in order to provide a more dynamic listening experience.

Deadwing was the band's eighth studio album and the second in a run of three releases that for many represent the pinnacle of the band's artistic achievements. Following the breakthrough of In Absentia, Deadwing continued the band’s commercial and critical ascent and was PT's top selling record at the time.

Debs

Are you sure about that, Debs?

What's the vinyl like? I've had some problems with K-Scope - so much so, in fact, that I don't bother with K-Scope vinyl anymore. I've also had problems with their CDs now I think about it. But at least Burning Shed has a great no quibble replacement policy.

If I could sum up the sound of this in one word, it would be 'flat'.  Massively disappointing would be an understatement.  The vinyl version supposedly uses a less compressed remaster done by Steven Wilson and yet my CD version is miles better.  The vinyl is dynamically stunted, no air, space, or indeed top end extension.  It is also recorded at a low level so needs cranking up to get a decent volume which emphasises surface noise, of which there is a disappointingly large amount.

A waste of my precious cash; there is nothing here that would make me want to listen to this LP over my CD version.

Sadly, I now fear for SQ of the forthcoming release of In Absentia which I have also ordered.

A very sad state of affairs.

Ian

Well, I've just given this a listen and couldn't disagree more. It's only just beaten by In Absentia as my favourite PT album, and on the clear vinyl it sounds terrific. Quiet, flat pressing, great dynamics. Lots of micro-details not apparent on the CD.

Thanks Tony.  That leaves me a little more hopeful.  Particularly as I have a white vinyl issue of In Absentia on the way.

Most recent arrival is this European issue of Iggy Pop's Post Pop Depression.

I first heard this album on a Bentley road trip to Spa last year. It grabbed me from the first track to the last, and sounded pretty good too on the Naim for Bentley system in the Bentayga we had borrowed for the trip.  So as soon as we got back to the UK I ordered my own CD copy and it became an almost permanent fixture in the car for the next few months. Having already had the CD, the vinyl rather passed me by until recently when I saw a copy and thought, why not? It's nicely pressed, and cut by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman, so it's inevitably a "wow", yes?  Er... no, or at least, not quite. It's odd - a curates egg - good in parts, i.e. some tracks, and not so good in others, with a slightly murky balance.  While there is some nice inner detail at times, and I was drawn to some new details that I had missed on the CD, It lacked the clarity and impact of the CD.

Compare this to another Chris Bellman vinyl cut, and one that's cut from a digital file as well - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' Mojo - and the sense of disappointment is clear; I had this one close at hand, a US 2LP issue, so it went on straight after. To cut straight to the chase, regardless of the digital file source, Mojo on vinyl is sensationally good.

I haven't heard the CD in a while, but I'm in no hurry to do so with such a wonderful LP issue at hand.  A great album - very highly recommended on vinyl.

I'll be very interested to learn what you think of it Richard. I've got an original vinyl copy which sounds excellent, it'll take some beating.

Tony, Richard,

A friend hereabouts received his copy of In Absentia slightly before the 'official' release date; no names will be mentioned to protect the guilty!  He also has the Tonefloat version of the album, which I have heard on his system (LP12 Klimax with Aro into full 500 system/Titan 707) and it sounds very good.  He reported that the new release bettered it, so I ordered one; I can confirm it is FANTASTIC! (Even on my far more modest LP12).

So, I would be very interested to hear what your thoughts are on the new pressing of IA compared to Deadwing; for me, on my system, IA is night and day better than Deadwing and I stand by my initial statement that my CD version of Deadwing sounds markedly better; I heard what I heard.

But, you clearly heard something different which makes me wonder whether I had a duff copy of Deadwing.

And I agree with you, that with the exception of one or two tracks, I think Deadwing contains some of PT's best work; a view not shared by many it would seem!

Appreciate your comparative views on the two LPs.

Cheers,

Ian

I received my white vinyl issue of In Absentia and after a very cold walk with the dog, we are now sat listening. Sides 1 & 2 so far sound really good. Such a good album too. Along with Recordings, probably my favourite from PT.

Bought this morning for £3.50 from a local charity shop and holds many fond memories.  Needed a good clean but is flat, scratch free and very quiet for an original pressing.

And this one came from my local second hand record shop in Inverness this afternoon.  Another well-recorded, quiet, flat LP in great condition; a bargain at a fiver!

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Echo

A Three-sided double album - Warner Bros reissue

This TP reissue album is not the usual 'Reprise' vinyl, will be interesting to hear what it sounds like later.

Also, will be my very first listen to this album, so looking forward to a very enjoyable airing this evening.
