Great choice I love The Three Sounds but haven't heard this one yet.

I managed to find a mint copy of the half speed mastered issue of Dire Straits first album.  How could I resist a comparison against a mint early original, and the fairly recent US Warners Bernie Grundman cut "from the original analogue tape".

The result was surprising; Overall I'd rate the US Warners reissue slightly ahead of the early original.  It keeps all that's good of the original but is slightly less dry and there's greater inner detail.  The Half speed was rather disappointing.  It wasn't night and day - in isolation you'd be happy with any of them, but the half speed sounded even drier than the original and slightly rolled off too. Most interesting...

Double vinyl arriving tomorrow ????

I finally had a chance to play the recent reissue of Paul McCartney's Chaos & Creation In The Backyard.

It's a wonderful album, and one that has recently spent much time as a CD spinning at home and especially in the car - thanks to Joerand for mentioning this one in this thread here:

https://forums.naimaudio.com/t...10#75483719004781610

The good news is that there does appear to be better inner detail and dynamics to the vinyl release.  The vinyl is nice and flat and quiet too.  The bad news is that it suffers from being pressed just slightly off-centre.  It's only very slight, but it's annoying all the same and detectable on piano. This seems to be something that recent pressings cock up on a lot.  Is it that the presses are all worn out?  Or is it just indicative of poor QC?  I'll get my file out and shave a bit out of the spindle hole to see if I can improve matters.  But really I'd much rather not have to do this...

Another album I recently got to spin on vinyl is Coldplay's Ghost Stories.

Now this one was quite a surprise.  I was debating whether to bother getting the LP - I have the CD, I like some of the tunes, even if the whole "break up" theme does get laid on rather thick at times.  Where the CD suffers somewhat is in the heavy handed loudness and compression.  Well, what can I say, but what a transformation with the vinyl.  Far more dimension and inner detail and even some dynamics - well done Sterling.  What's more the pressing is flat and... it's perfectly round, hooray!

I can no longer play vinyl but using the download code that comes with this album I can get to listen to this fine album.

Big Calm is one of my favourite LP's  from that period and reminds of a fantastic Holiday on a beach on the island of Koh Phangan Thailand over Christmas and the New Year back in 2002/2003 lovely memories.

Hugh Masekela - Hope - Analogue Productions 45rm double vinyl.  I already own a copy of this but picked this up for an excellent price and so will leave this one sealed incase my own well played copy wears out

Coal Train on side four is worth the entire price on it's own a top musician recorded live on top of his game fantastic.

I had a similar experience with Parachutes and a Rush of Blood to the Head so may give this a try although the quick listens I've had on Tidal have not grabbed me in the same way.

BTW the Tidal Master version of Parachutes if you have a Dac that plays MQA is one of the better titles in the series.

The Orb - No Sounds Are Out of bounds. A nice bundle option with an extra instrumental CD. Vinyl is signed as well. Back to the 90's we go!

Thanks Richard.

I see there’s a new ‘box set’ of the entire DS catalogue from ‘elusive disc’ offering all 6 discs on 180gram with the last 2 albums, 45rpm doubles. Seems to be same Bernie Grundman sourced. Do we think good quality and value ?

Kevin, I'm guessing it's re-press of the full set that was reissued a few years back.  I didn't want all of them as I have more mint original copies of Brothers in Arms than I care for, and also a mint original of On Every Street, and didn't really want another reissue. It is possible to have too much Dire Straits...

Of the others, Love over Gold is excellent - originals were never the quietest on the opening track, but at leats my copy of the US Chris Bellman cut reissue (pressed at Pallas) is almost silent.  Sounds great too, but then so does the original.

Making Movies, I have but haven't listened to yet.  Communique was a bit disappointing.  It sounded a bit flat compared to what I remembered from the originals.  I'll have dig one of them out and give it a listen and also listen to the reissue again as well. I just remember being a bit disappointed with this one, which was a shame because Communique might well be my favourite DS album.

Thanks again Richard. Really helpful. I think for now I’ll just get the Grundman/Pallas WEALP49783 reissue of DS1 and see how I get on with that. I need a copy of On Every Street at some point since I don’t have that on Vinyl at all.

Much obliged, Kevin

Bob Marley & The Wailers - Kaya 40 - (Pre relelease) 40TH Anniversary release of Kaya on double vinyl one LP has a remaster by Bob's son Stephen and the other has the original mix. Also available in Green vinyl but I like my records in plain black if possible.

Alborosie meets The Wailers United  - Unbreakable - (pre order) Greensleeves

I'm not usually a fan of Alborosie but this record features The Wailers, Beres Hammond and Chronixx so it's a must for me.

I was shopping in my local Sainsbury's earlier this morning and I noticed that they'd started selling vinyl. They had this album there for £16.

Although I have it eight times on vinyl already I didn't have this, the 2016 Grundman/Guthrie/Plant vinyl remaster. So I decided to buy it with my Nectar points!

On order from Strut Records

Joan Armatrading - Practical Hifi Nimbus Supercut.

I love this album and the originals sound very good, but I'd heard that this was a really exceptional reissue.  So when a really nice copy came up at the right price I couldn't resist.  And yes, it's very, very good indeed.  A step up even on the original and of course, a near perfect pressing.

What do you think of it Kevin? I have a couple of versions, but both quite compromised. If I can get a good quality replacement at this price I’ll follow you in. How does it compare to your other 8 copies? Recommended?

Kevin, unless you can find a 2nd or 3rd UK press (or an EMI 100) in mint condition for £20 or less, I think this 2016 Pink Floyd Records one is the copy to get... it's pretty good, and the pressing quality is excellent (nice and quiet).

Good enough for me. Thanks For the steer. K
