What was the last vinyl you bought?

As the original post is no more I thought I would start a new one.

Arrived today in the post:

Hi Kuma,

They just arrived and I didn't have the opportunity to listen to them last night. When I get back in town tomorrow I will give a listen and let you know what I think.

David and Alma came over to my place a couple of weeks ago. David tuned up the LP12 and played around with my system setup a little bit. It was markedly improved after he did his stuff. Great folks.

Kuma,

I finally had a chance to listen. The Los Lobos Mofi has a bit more clarity and detail. if there is any thing I didn't like it would be that it was a bit more polite sounding than  my original. I really like the 45 rpm Freewheelin' Bobster. I have two mono copies, an original Columbia and a Sundazed reissue. SInce the Mofi is stereo it is a bit like apples and oranges. For the mono I still prefer the Columbia. The Mofi has a lot of presence and immediacy and sounds downright great. If you are a fan of the early work of Mr. Z. I would recommend the Mofi very highly.

I have an original copy of So Tonight That I Might See on vinyl  and it is an absolute gem.

Let me know what this one sounds like as I have my reservations on re-issues.

Okay,

i see that original copies of Mazzy Star sell for more than these reissued ones... although 1990 isn't really that old... my copy looks like lovely vinyl to me and only needs to have the static cleaned off first, i like to let it dry for 12 hours or so after too.

will play tomorrow and get back to you.

Thanks, Debs.

I'd expect at least a good couple of plays before you can actually form an opinion.

Miss Sandoval's vocals are worth the  wait.

Will be looking forward to your feedback.

Matt,

Thanks for that. Is it ok to cut and paste your commend on my 'vinyl reissue thread'?

Do you live near David and Alma?

If so you are very lucky that he can visit and tweak your system!

I love her Waldstein. She's one of my favourite piano player. Bought this original Vox recording to see if it betters my later fake stereo reissue with wobbly pitch and clangy piano tone.

Kuma,

Please feel free to cut and paste.  David and Alma live a couple of hours away. They had an install relatively nearby and stayed in Albany for a night. David had wanted to tweak my system anyway so they tied it into the other visit. My stereo was put in order andI treated them to a Gillian Welch concert.  David fixed the latch on my bathroom door as well. Talk about a full service dealer.

Regards

Matt

Matt,

It's good to see David & Alma doing some travelling for install. It's great you've got them working.

You're lucky that he's one of a few US Naim dealers how knows how to put together an active Naim system.

I am so unhip, I don't even know who Gillian Welch is! ( been listening to too many dead pianists and conductors )

After my Airbag arrived from Burning Shed, I ordered this after seeing it on the flyer...

Small Faces - Ogden's Nut Gone Flake - vinyl import edition (vinyl)

This is an import edition available to customers from the UK.

Charly Records and its international distribution partner Snapper Music plc will be rolling out a programme of releases from the Small Faces recordings for Immediate Records from April 2012 for the world ex UK.

The install part of the trip was for another customer although we are talking about a pre upgrade later this year. David convinced me of the benefits of active operation many years ago. No regrets on my part. Gillian Welch is sort of a Americana/folkie singer/songwriter musician. She and her guitarist Dave Rawlings put on a fine show.

Tony,

having played both sides twice : )

As I said before, on first impression my record looked lovely enough, but on the turntable there is a 1mm warp on my copy, not much but one can’t help notice the cart bobbing on the small lip of a wave.

Not pips or pops but there is frequent crackle, most of which is mild enough to play below the music level fortunately, but it’s there all the same, and only sounds nasty on side2 track2.

The recorded sound is earthy, which is the nature of the play to some extent, however just her vocals are given that old bathroom tone for reverb effect, and that’s how it is from start to finish.

The music is nice imo, pink floyd guitar riffs and bluesy slides…

It doesn’t sound digital but the SQ is only just average for modern reissue vinyl.

I’ve not heard a original 1992 copy would can imagine them better than this. Hope they are anyway.

Still worth buying if you can get one without the warp and crackle and under £13 quid or so, most are charging far more money but this vinyl is a bit cheapo pressed imo and should be bargain priced.

Miss Sandoval's voice really is quite good imo, but no where near as cool as Chan Marshall [Cat Power], and her Matador label vinyl is RTI factory made which really is a lot classier too.

You ought to give them a listen : )

Debs,

Thanks for the feedback. As previous experiences have dictated, I think I'll give it a miss and stick to the CD copy for the moment or until I come across an original one in acceptable condition. Must admit my complete ignornace as to Chan Marshal musical/vocal abilities and will try to listen to some of her material ASAP.

Once again, many thanks for the update.

E.

My copy will be here tomorrow.

Missed the postman today.

Have been looking forward to this brilliant album on vinyl since the day it came out on CD a couple of years ago.

Well spotted. Mine arrived today. There are some good memories in there somewhere, but I can't remember what they are!
