45rpm RSD version

Posted on: 27 September 2012 by mutterback

Electronica always sounds better on vinyl on my system. This came with a CD, and its almost "too much" for my system, speakers start wigging out, bass is bloom. (I continue to love the Nonesuch LP/CD packages)

Vinyl sounds great, with bass nice and tight.  Format or system?

I went to Amoeba on Sunset in LA for Dylan's latest and bought more

Dylan -

Tempest

Oh Mercy

180 Basement Tapes with The Band

Glen Hansard- Rhythm and Repose

This one I didn't know, he has gentle acoustic guitar and voice, beautifully done. I need calm music now in my life, I'm quite pleased by it.  I can't seem to get imageshack to work. One thing that struck me I thought it was a photo of him from a distance then found it was an amazing painting. Sure wish I could do that

US Capitol Apple. Stereo. I believe a 1971 reissue.

I bought this along with Rubber Soul and Yesterday & Today from my friendly 2nd hand record stall at the local market in near mint condition. I have the Mono versions of RS and Revolver so I thought I'd buy these stereo copies. I didn't realise how people in the States were so short changed with these albums. On Revolver there are no less than 3 tracks missing compared to the UK issue including one of my favourite John Lennon tracks 'I'm Only Sleeping'. Where do I find it? On ' Yesterday and Today'. The guys in the US didn't get to here these albums as they were mean't to be heard.

The quality of the vinyl I bought today (3 for £25) is good though.

Yes, the US Revolver is a disapointing album.  On the other hand, the US 'Yesterday and Today' is one of my two favorite Beatles albums (the other is the "US" version of 'The Beatles Second Album').  So it all sort of came out in the wash.  The US version Capitals also sound less clear but have a good bit more excitement and dynamics than the UK versions, though this isn't a matter of great concern, except for aficianados.

I know Stu. I mentioned it on the remastered Beatles thread  as being the best deal so far. Postage is £8 which is not bad considering the weight.

Steve,

Hi Steve. Hope you are well.

When I read your post yesterday it reminded me I had a copy of The Beatles Yesterday & Today which I bought new some time in the late 1970's.  Thought it would be fun to compare copies? Ref numbers etc.

Mine is on the Orange Capital label with black track listings and the Capital logo in gold.

Side 1 has the letters and numbers ST-12553 –B8 #6 on the run out.

Side 2 has the ST-2-2553 –F26 on the run out.

Catalogue No on back cover ST 2553.

Front cover Beatles Sat on Trunk but could be a paste over from the original butcher cover as the picture is slightly raised and does not completely cover the thick cardboard sleeve no import hole in the cover. New Improved Full Dimensional Stereo logo across the top track listings and LP title, red printed Gold Record Award in a star logo.

Back Cover track listings  9 b/w pictures, Something New The Beatles, The Beatles Second Album, The Beatles Story, Meet The Beatles, Beatles 65, The Early Beatles, Beatles V1, Help, Rubber Soul. A small stamp like logo in the bottom right hand corner and the number 21.

Do you think we might both have a Beatles Rarity? Do hope so

Regards Graham.

Hi Graham,

Sorry for the delay in replying. Busy weekend on call for the hospital and decorating the kitchen for the Boss.

I have a copy of the Goldmine Price Guide so I can help with identifying your album. I've checked the 3 albums I bought and, as expected, they are 1971 issues.

With regard to your Orange Capitol label copy of Yesterday and Today; I'm afraid it's not a second state Butchers Cover worth in excess of $1500 but a much later reprint from 1978 worth about $12. However, although you won't be able to retire on the proceeds, it does state that all the tracks on the album are in true stereo and not re-channelled.

I have a few very early US pressings of Beatles LP's which my father brought back from the States in the '60s. The most valuable is a first press of 'Meet The Beatles'.

I have to say that I find it a bit odd playing these albums with tracks 'missing' but generally the quality of the pressings are pretty good.

Thank you Steve for replying to my speculative bid for mucho $ on the Beatles album. Guess the retirement (and the 500 series) will have to wait for some time yet - maybe indefinitely! Never mind the album in 1978 only cost 50p

Graham.

It's worth looking on ebay and other 2nd hand sites for US Beatles LPs. They are often sold over here for much less than they go for in the States.

Currently listening to a lovely mint copy of the US LP 'Hey Jude', although the label titles the LP 'The Beatles Again' 1970. What's good is that most of the tracks are singles not on the normal UK albums. SQ is beautiful.

Keep well,

Steve

Take care Graham.

Arrived today. 180g vinyl from ‘Rhino Vinyl. I have most of the Doors albums on original vinyl but for some reason which I cannot remember never got this one. Just give it a first listen and it sounds very good. The label on the shrink wrap cover says featuring the original stereo mixes not clear what that means but the record has an original looking Red Electra label and the card gate fold sleeve is good quality and well printed. It cost £12.52 + postage.

Graham,

These Doors Rhino reissues are very good and I can recommend all of them. SQ is good and they are well packaged. Have you tried the 45rpm Acoustic Sounds reissues. I have the first 2 albums and they are superb. I'm just awaiting a shipment with the remaining albums which should arrive this week.

Keep well

Hi Steve.

Must say I am very impressed with the Rhino record. I have never listened to any 45rpm re-issues.  What do you think the difference in SQ is over say the Rhino's.

Regards Graham 'good weekend listening'

Posted on: 06 October 2012 by Steve J

Graham,

I'm currently listening to The Doors, the 1st album. This is the only one of the 45rpm issues that's not taken from the original master, 'the next best available', but it is still excellent. Strange Days is only marginally better but on the strength of these 2 albums I have ordered the rest. They are certainly better than the Rhino issues but should be considering the difference in price. I'm paying about £43 per copy with free P&P. I feel they are worth it as I love the Doors but others don't seem to like 45rpm albums as the sides are much shorter. I can't wait for LA Woman on 45 as this turned out to be the worst pressing on the Rhino issues and my original copy is well played and a little crackly.

Graham,

I forgot to mention, try The Doors 'Live in New York Felt Forum'. It's a stonking live Doors album.

Steve. I have an original copy of 'Absolutely Live'. Do you know which of the Doors live albums where recorded at the hight of there powers.

Graham.

Graham,

I also have the original Absolutely Live and I prefer the new album. I think they were recorded around the same time i.e. 1970. The vinyl edition is of their first night at Felt Forum but there is a 6 CD box set of all 4 nights. There are also CD issues of other shows in 1970 and some say that Live in Detroit is the best. Anyway, for vinyl junkies like us I can heartily recommend the Felt Forum LP.

What part of the country do you live in?
