What was the last vinyl you bought?

As the original post is no more I thought I would start a new one.

Arrived today in the post:

Hi Graham,

I have the EU version. I often find the US pressings are slightly better, e.g. Fleetwood Mac 'Rumours' 45RPM. It is not always the case though; look at the mess they made of the US version of the recent Beatles Box Set.

Hi Graham,

A correction to my earlier post. I just spoke to my father who said we saw Howlin' Wolf at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester not Belle Vue that's where he took me to see Johnny Cash.

Steve,

Just seen this post. How cool is your Dad? By the way did your dad ever take you to see the Beatles..... My mum took me to see Roy Orbison when I was about 10.

Regards Graham.

Hi Graham,

I hope it's a good copy. Is it Mono or Stereo?

Listening to my Mono copy as we speak.

Enjoy

Kuma,

What year is it from?  Do you have a dedicated mono TT?

Posted on: 10 January 2013 by kuma

Joerand,

The recording is done in Aug. 1945 at Carnegie Hall live concert but not quiet sure of the exact issue date on this. But from the lable desiwgn ( matt finish with gold lettering ) late 40s to very early 50 is my guess. ( before RIAA/Ortho curve )

I don't have a dedicated mono set up.

Do you?

I was going to get a mono cart for one of my ARO arm top, tho.

No I don't have a mono, I feel very fortunate that I was just able to get a RP6 within the last month or so.

On Sunday I bought s/h vinyl with a curious label - "The Worst of Jefferson Airplane"  RCA LSP-4459 from 1970.  It has a black RCA Victor with dog label that says "For best results use Victor Needles".  It also says "Orthophonic Recording". Similar to this label;

No where on the label or sleeve does this say it is a stereo record, but according to my Goldmine Guide, it's not a mono.  Just wondered if you ever encounter this with older records or if you have concern playing mono with a stereo cart or visa versa for fear of damaging the stylus or the vinyl.

Good God. Is that label a joke?

That's their shellac 78's ( pre LP/SP) era label.

Stereo needle will play both mono and stereo records safely.

Some mono cartridges ( like Miyabi mono ) which the cantilever does not move vertically at all will ruin the record and destroy a cartridge.

btw, congrats on the RP6. That's a terrific record player!

I don't know about the label.  It really piqued my interest while browsing in the shop.  A quick scan of Wikipedia shows that label from 1930.  Perhaps it was retro to use that label in 1970?  This is the album cover so maybe that old style label was a good match.

Thanks, I have really fallen back in love with my LPs since I got the RP6.  It's a very lively, musical player.

So the mono cart on the ARO arm?  Then you would switch arms on occasion to play a mono?

Yep. That's the idea.

I need to figure out the correct EQ curve for a pre RIAA era records, too. Oddly, they sound good on my modern phonos.

Wow GML.  My last trip to the s/h vinyl shop netted me A Salty Dog, Hotel California, and Fleetwood Mac's Tusk, all in very good shape.  Seems we share the same great musical tastes, though I've never heard of Runrig.

Interesting band if you have a gaelic folk rock bent. Unfortunately a very poor gig when we saw them , the band were good but the audience were very flat. That's Bracknell for you.
