What was the last vinyl you bought?

As the original post is no more I thought I would start a new one.

Arrived today in the post:

Richard,

I am envious you have the original press.

I haven't listened to them yet but I love Cluytens Ravel. I was side tracked by Mahler!

btw, who is your favourite Mahler's 9th?

Great album and fantastic release. I have the original too which is probably just as good but with a slightly different sound

Kuma,

it's been a while since I've listened to Mahler's 9th.  I have some big gaps here - I have Solti's on Decca, Klemperer's on EMI, Walter's on Columbia, and Haitink's on Philips, but missing Barbirolli's EMI recording as well as many others.  I think the last time I listened to the 9th it was Solti but couldn't honestly give you a particular favourite without going back and immersing myself in the 9th afresh.

Wazza, thanks.  I haven't yet listened to this.  I had it all ready to go a couple of evening's ago but then I kept being interrupted by phone calls and put it aside for another night.

Richard,

I bet that the Klemperer's 9th would be marvelous!

I read that Walter was *the* Mahler man because he was so close to the composer himself but his Columbia performance I have to date is dull and uninspired.

@ Kevin W.

Hi K saw this and thought of you, not sure if you will have seen it?  A new release by Music On Vinyl.

These two records were recorded in 1968 and 1975 respectively, and have until this day never seen a vinyl release at all! The BBC Radiophonic Workshop would also create the soundtrack for Doctor Who in 1963 and later on The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The BBC Radiophonic Workshop would document their findings and share these with the public. In this way, they influenced mainstream music. Sound engineer Roger Mayer, who supplied guitar pedals to Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix, was influenced by their wiring diagrams. In 1997 the electronic dance music magazine Mixmag described the Workshop as, "the unsung heroes of British electronica.

Bought on the recommendation of Adrian (Lontano) from this forum.

@Kevin-W. Certainly does look like outstanding VFM. I'm curious if you notice any difference in quality (sonics or surface noise) between the black versus white vinyl.

Hi Randy - definitely one of the biggest bargains ever!

Six of the LPs are black with only "Chron" is on white vinyl. I have to say that there is NO difference between the black and white vinyl. The sonics are excellent and so is the pressing (I've found this to be the case with all Rune Grammofon LPs). "Chron" has one small crackle midway through side two but is otherwise completely silent.

Yesterday at Rise in Worcester....

Worth it just for the extra verse dedicated to Kirsty MacColl at the end of A new England live.

Is that the band spy vs spy? I remember a band of the same name back in the late 80's early 90's, they had a single out that I loved but could not trace as they seemed to disappear of the face of the earth not long afterwards. They had a mod sound, hope it is them.

Jethro Tull - Benefit. And Massive Attack - Mezzanine.

It is great to have a proper record shop in St Albans again!

Chimp,

Nope, it's Billy Bragg's first EP on side A with a live revisit 30 years later on side B.

The Spy vs Spy single I can remember but as for a copy... sorry it didn't get into my record collection.

I'm intrigued. St Albans is just up the road from me. Where is this new record shop?

Nitin Sawhney - One-Zero Boxset

It wasn't cheap but it is definitely one of the best vinyl purchases I have ever made, it was recorded at Metropolis and cut straight to vinyl, first time since 1973 or something, sounds sublime

Hi Steve J - the shop is Empire Records in Heritage Close. This is the small mall off the High Street on the South side - just opposite the clock tower.

They have a good selection of new vinyl and secondhand stuff. Not always cheap - they have a nice looking Amon Duul II LP for £50 (can't remember the title now), but I think the pricing is fair. The stuff is well sorted alphabetically so you can find things quickly if you know what you are looking for.

Thanks Kevin. Reason I ask is that when I was a kid the few colored vinyl LPs I owned sounded better (quieter and deeper) than the original black. I guess it's all fairly high quality vinyl today, regardless of the color. Cheers,

Randy
