Brilliantly produced box set.  Great sound, perfect pressings and, of course, some of the most beautiful, heartfelt live jazz ever recorded.  Real desert island stuff this!

Ray Charles 24 greatest hits, arrived today

Posted on: 08 May 2014 by rodwsmith

My solitary Record Store Day purchase this year was a ltd (300 copies!) white-vinyl re-release of this 2004 Album by the Dutch band/duo The Use of Ashes.

Ethereal space rock acoustic electric stuff. A bit wafty and summery, but with some nice guitar and melodies.

 -

Rather nice! Sort-of Riesling-y music.

Terrific three night gig from 1977 (King Records, 1980), shortly after the sudden, unexpected death of Art's friend Hampton Hawes. Very soulful performances, and great sound quality.

Would love to know what you think Steve, I looked at getting that myself, but not sure if the concerts would be sufficiently different/of good enough quality to justify the price.

Kevin I'm lucky that I got it on preorder at £85. I Would not want to pay the £125 Amazon are asking for it now.

It was supposed to come with a HD download which has been changed to mp3.The book isn't the hardback that comes with the CD version. All vinyl pressed at GZ and no poly lined inners so the vinyl has scuffs already.

I had a quick listen to the first album and to me it doesn't quite sound right will have a better listen durring the week.

Thanks for the heads up Steve - £125 is a lot, especially for something that isn't quite as described.

I have had a a copy of this album on Polydor records for years which has always sounded v good, but its not in the gate-fold cover or on the Burbank Warner Bros label. Very excited to have found a Ist press of this most fantastic live album.
