Are we sleep-walking out of Europe ?

Posted by: Don Atkinson on 09 February 2016

Media interest seems to be focused on the trivial matter of "in-work benefits" to migrant workers from Europe.

Very little informed discussion of the benefits and consequences of us remaining part of Europe v the benefits and consequences of us leaving.

Or am I just not tuning into the appropriate TV channel or overlooking some "White Paper" that is on sale in WH Smith ?

incidentally, where in your wild imagination did you dream up that anyone would seek a “lets rejoin” referendum?

Yes, I am converted to the need for a 66% majority for any future Referendum dealing with the EU, a stance I am sure will meet with you Remsiners.

You will need the rejoin Referendum as we are leaving the EU, or did you not know?

What Huge said.

But if Britain were actually to leave, with all the cost and industries moved away or closed, everybody struggling, lime a second-world country, why on earth would anyone even think of re-joining, with the additional cost that would entail, just to become a minor bit-player? That would be like admitting Brexit was foolish in the extreme. ...oh, so that is what you mean, you picture demands for a re-entry referendum because everyone who hasn’t already come to their senses will inevitably realise the abject stupidity of Brexit once the deed is done.

Well Resurrection, if you leave the door wide open are you surprised that I walk in?

After all it's my civic duty to check up on you, to see if you've died or if you just need help!

(Just couldn't resist that!)

Well, it's not the former because I just checked, and if it appears that I have gone AWOL it is usually because you lucky people have to wait with baited breath until the editor has proof read what pearls of wisdom I am about to bestow upon you and if they are just too good for the likes of you, Huge, I am afraid  just don't get to see them. As for help, I'm not hiring, sorry! ????

You might need to try that again with a small z as well ?

You seem to be able to gloss over important details.

Hmm, zikarius seems to be something about Finnish Deviant art, but, as far as I can see, no nasty connotations. Am sure he'll fill us in later.

Oh, and I did respond to his question: left to its own devices the Erdogahs and Putins would make mincemeat of the EU. Their problem resides with NATO and its US backbone. Anyway, it appears that Trump's neocon aggression, along with Chinese cajoling has got Mr Kim hotfooting it down to South Korea, something Trump's posing, preening predecessor did not achieve in eight years, nor would Horrid Hilary either.

I thought Resurrection was a reincarnation of Nigel Farrage when he was pushed out of British politics, given the timing of his appearing on here and the impressions given by some of his posts (and he did not deny when suggested!), but increasingly he reminds me of a gun-defending present-POTUS-supporting far right American. I wonder if he had a different moniker when the former T thread was running.

IB, you never fail to amuse! Actually, I am a very quiet, peace loving, retired old gent living frugally off his OAP,  simply portraying redneck fantasies on this BB when actually I am a Corbyn loving, EU admiring, open minded, tolerant Liberal. I love everybody, everywhere and just wish they could all be here. Oh, just noticed they all are.

Ressurection was of course incarnated when gerronwithit had his wings clipped, but our eagle eyed editor could not be fooled that easily, could you ED? And thus I am ever constrained from expressing all my warm and heartfelt principles since the emotional incontinence these would engender would be bigly crushing.

Actually, the one thing I might really take offence, sic, at would be anything to do with guns. I have fired shotguns at clay pigeons 3 times in my life and am ardently anti-gun. My alter-ego on Breitbart is not well received by the real US rednecks as I am as happy to express my views there as here. In fact they are much more impolite to me as anyone here.

"Please don't let me be misunderstood!" (My musical allusion for today).

Dan, my own post below was posted before your own, but, as always, awaited approval. Resurrection is gerronwithit and has not changed his views one iota. If I wanted, I could soon create another alter-ego with a different email address and have my views posted unfettered. It would be have been naive of me and anyone following this thread to fail to realise that Resurrection was part of my own mischief making.

Anyway, anything I write that is considered suspect in any way then you won't see it even if that annoys me. However, I will admit that on the odd occasion the mod has been correct in not posting something I have written and once I have sobered up am usually in agreement. Before you clutch at straws, I am sober at least most of the day, most days. ????

Zikarus is just a fantasy. My favourite alias might be zeromancer, but well in a forum mainly dealing with music that would be somewhat...

So your reason for the brexit is exactly what?

Your answer though is interesting as in reducing peace to weapons in the end. The strength of the EU lies indeed far beyond that. Let's call it understanding among nations. Guess thats more valuable because sustainable than the - nonetheless important - NATO. Especially since there live so many people so close together in Europe. Keeping in mind that my grandfathers were fighting against your ancestors until only 19 years before I was born it is quite amazing what had already changed until I turned 19. Remember a 10 day visit in Broadstairs with my school class that was quite enlightening.... And even 30 more years later Europe has matured even more.

The EU has its weaknesses, that need to be addressed, no doubt, but what better organisation (hope you like it this way :-) do we have? Whereelse could we (almost all European people) be forced to deal and argue with each other for a better future? What could be wrong about this?

Head back to single states? Not the right direction. I like families and family life. But hey why do the Brexiteers not consequently go down the whole route of their argumentation and fulfill their dream in making 'Little Britain' - or better little England - come true by giving up Wales etc pp?
