Are we sleep-walking out of Europe ?
Posted by: Don Atkinson on 09 February 2016
Media interest seems to be focused on the trivial matter of "in-work benefits" to migrant workers from Europe.
Very little informed discussion of the benefits and consequences of us remaining part of Europe v the benefits and consequences of us leaving.
Or am I just not tuning into the appropriate TV channel or overlooking some "White Paper" that is on sale in WH Smith ?

You, of course would prefer Corbyn, McDonnell, Nugee and Abbott. Unbelievable!
The converse of 'A' isn't necessarily 'B'.
A Hiuge example of obscurantism...
Resurrection posted:The Gov has said that MPs will be given a "meaningful" vote. I would like to think this will be a free vote, not a three-line-whip, and that "meaningful" will include the option to Remain. (Our MPs need to consider the National interest of 65m people, not just the wishes of c.17.5m voters in the summer of 2016)Obviously the last General Election was a travesty too as the Conservatives only got 13.6 million votes and Labour 12.8 million. Hardly representative of the 65 million are they? Logic and Remainers are on completely separate planets. It all sounds so trite and right when you are in complete agreement with one another, eh!
So logically from your agreement of the position that the current government isn't representative, you appear to agree with the view that that 17.5m voters aren't representative of 65m people.
So... You are now on the same planet as the Remainers!
All nice and peaceful now that you've changed sides!
(Hope you enjoy the humour!)
Yet again we have a quitter (not for the first time this week ) indicating they believe the people in power in the UK and the alternatives are not fit to govern.
So, why not leave the power in the hands of the EU, who, on the evidence of the brexit negotiations are far more competent/organised than the UK government.
You know it makes sense.
Talking of Home Secretaries, I see a leaked letter published by The Guardian has cranked up the pressure on Rudd. Apparently she wrote to the PM in January 2017 describing a 10% increase in enforced deportations, a target she has very recently told the House of Commons she wasn't aware of. Oops!
I'd be interested to see how she talks her way out of this one. Misleading the House is normally a crime for which ministers do not survive.
I should have added, if Rudd does go there will be much celebration among the Tory herd-Brexiteers like Rees-Mogg as Rudd is known as a strong Remainer.

But interestingly, misleading the electorate in referendums is apparently perfectly OK!

Yes, Huge. It's shameful. The 'Westminster bubble' seems to have 'values' that are often very different to those of the man-in-the-street.

Indeed you have a deep knowledge of Europe and all things European.

If she wrote that to the the PM, and latter hasn’t sacked her already for lying about it, then surely her own position is untenable...

You were guilty of presumption, which where politics is unforgiveable. I’npm unclear how Huge’s answer must be obsuration, when it is simply pointing out that your prsumption is not necessarily correct, and indeed it may not be.

Ordinarily I would agree. But it must be a bit hard for TM to sack Rudd for trying, unsuccessfully, to hide a targets-based deportation policy which she created.
I suspect TM might now hope Rudd falls on her sword so enabling her to keep some distance.

If I understood any of what you have written, IB, I might respond, but alas I don't.

What on Earth leads you to such an outrageous conclusion ? You are clearly demented !
Rudd has resigned.

You're getting a little excited there. Take it easy, after all Rudd's gone - hopefully to be replaced by JRM ????
It will be interesting to see what the inevitable reshuffle delivers.
JRM for Home Secretary?

Ah. JR-M, then!

Yes, JRM he'll soon show Johnny Foreigner what for! Actually, as far as I know he s not anti-immigration, or indeed anti-foreigner. Come on guys and gals let's all agree for once that having got rid of Rudderless we can drop all our differences and become Mogg Maniacs! ????

Or moggies!
Okay, only joking about JRM. In a spirit of cross Party cooperation and in order to provide accurate numerical control of immigration, May has asked Diane Abbott to become Home Secretary.
Can't we just try and keep going and that as Rudd was simply carrying out TM's policies, can't we get rid of her too?
(Then we could have JR-M as PM instead!) Oh happy days
