Football Season 2017/18

Posted by: Kevin-W on 11 July 2017

As requested by Steve (Paper Plane) on the 16/17 thread, here's a new one for 2017/18. All leagues/divisions welcome.

Come on you Irons!

Another interesting weekend in the PL. Today's wins for the Magpies and Huddersfield have made things very, very tight in the bottom half.  Nerves must be jangling at many clubs.

Quite. As a Saints fan, having spent an afternoon at St Mary's I'm now more troubled than I thought I was.

Sadly I’m still travelling back from Newcastle - very sadly. Not a great performance but at least the stairs at St James Park helped with the fitness.

Blimey, Chris. That's a long journey, especially after a defeat.

Yeah. My has provided plenty of opportunity for that in recent years.

I’m not going to the FA Cup game at Huddersfield next week - going to Cymbiosis

Bad result for you Chris.Watched the 2nd half and thought the Saints looked jaded.Surely with the sale of Virgil Van Dijk I was expecting some new signings but there does'nt seem to be any.Hope you stay up - Whats going on at St.Mary's ?

Hope you got some good pics

I think it's going to be adios Premier league for Stoke City this time. I had a bad feeling before the season began having sold their main play maker / scorer  Arnautovic to West Ham and brought in no one of significance up front.  The games they needed to win to stand a chance of surviving are gone and they only won one of the last four. With who they still have left to play I think their luck is about to run out.

Thanks Ian. Saints were given a masterclass in attacking flair. Liverpool have the penetration we exactly lack. Your summation of the second half looks right to me.

As for what is going on, even as a semi insider it is very difficult to know. My view is that a side with this set of players should be finishing mid-table. I think Mike said the same earlier in the thread.

Thanks abou pics. The club photographer and I have been saying for a while that it's hard to get good stuff if your team seem to be permanently on the back foot.

Yep. Schooled them, especially second half- but we must be more clinical in our finishing in future. Should have scored 4.

Squeaky bum time in stoppage time, but we survived.

Now for Juve...........

Out of interest Chris you must  have thousands of pictures built up over your time there. Is there any particular favourite ones when you think I've nailed it with this one - I am sure there must be ?

Always loved Sports photography and have got quite big pic files of Man City and Cycling.

Chelski doing your Saints a favour tonight Its 3-0 at the moment with West Brom.

Boing, boing Baggies now seven points adrift. Not looking good for Pardew's powers of recovery.

I must tell you that my earliest recollection of a sporting image (albeit a moving one) is of watching TV and seeing Tony Book lift the FA Cup in City's red and black striped away kit in the 1969 final. After that it was the Moore and Pele shirt swap in Guadalajara at Mexico 70.

I don't tend to think of the archive stuff that much. When I worked on the paper it was all about knocking the pics out and getting them on the page.

Working for the club on home matchdays is totally different to the paper. It's all about getting the 'bangers'. They don't want volume. They don't want the kind of filler that will fill up a newspaper for the week until the next game. There's corporate PR stuff too. I sit in a comfortable office in the media suite before the game rather than in the photographer's wire room, and I eat the same food as the players. But I do miss the lensman banter with the pros at the top of their game, the guys who will be covering the World Cup etc for their agencies this Summer.

The pic that has given me most satisfaction this season is of Charlie Austin's goal celebration in the Huddersfield game. Saints made it into a fold-out poster that was included in the programme for the next game.

Thank heavens for Chelsea....

Your guys looking magnificent, Ian.

Thanks Chris for your explanation it sounds like your in a nice place with your job there.Out of interest the Pro's at the top of their game working for agencies what sort of money salary wise would they pull in ?Over 100 K I would imagine the real grafters, established lensmen. My nephew has been freelance the last 10 years and films adverts mainly.I do know that no month is the same for him and he's often away in Europe working.Took him a while after graduating from Winchester university to get going but there seems to be alot of networking in the industry and from what he tells me if a company likes you they have you back and recommend you to their clients.

You are very blessed having a job with an artistic creativity to it.

Hope you get your Cartridge sorted (saw your post in the corner)......I am also a LP12 Ittok user also a Technics SL 1210 both good decks..can't decide which is better though.

Yeah F.C Basal tonight for City.Leroy Sane might be on the bench.Just a brilliant player love his pace and vision glad he's back.Benjamin Mendy will be back next month.Thought he was awesome at right back earlier in the season before his injury.

Hi Ian, thanks. Just in case you don't know, I'm a freelance after about 15 years in local papers. I'm contracted for Saints' home games this season. I do other stuff too.

I have no real idea what the top guys at PA or Getty get but I would be very surprised if it is anywhere near the sort of money you are talking of.

Thanks about cartridge. I'm looking more at changing the phonostage now. Will post again on that thread when I get a home dem.

Good luck to City in Basel. The last time I looked Juve were 2-0 up against Spurs. I'm hoping my friend Massimo might grace this thread with his Torino perspective, so it's not only our regular Spurs men

Great fightback by the lads to make it 2-2 in Turin last night.

It's always a roller coaster ride being a Spurs fan !!

It was a good game to watch, too.  I felt a little for Buffon who let Eriksen's free-kick past him. Buffon wouldn't have let that in when he was in his pomp. He has been magisterial during his career and deserves to go out on a high. Anyway, while I think Lamela and  Aurier need to show more self-discipline, it was indeed a strong performance by Spurs. The thing that really struck me was that at no point during the game did Spurs look intimated by Juve, whereas as soon as Spurs pulled  goal back, Juve looked nervy.  If Spurs carry that confidence and fluidity in their play into the second leg, I think they will get through to the next round.

Great result for Spurs.Thought it was going to be a disaster night but Kane really rallied them.Bring on the return leg....

Maybe Spurs can win something or somethings this season....?

I know some might say this is more suitable for the 'Best Jokes' thread but I thought visitors to the Football thread would better appreciate it.
