As requested by Steve (Paper Plane) on the 16/17 thread, here's a new one for 2017/18. All leagues/divisions welcome.

Come on you Irons!

Yes it takes a real footballing genius to ensure the team gets slightly worse each year - conditionning your supporters to the point that they are happy with sixth place in the PL.

Wenger achieved much in his time at Arsenal but he didn't succession-plan and probably should have left earlier.  Still isn't Tony Adams looking for another manager job at the moment?

Having gone to a few matches over the years, I would say the level of intelligence of many a football fan is somewhat limited.....

Very true. Not on here, though.

Questionable at times....

Wenger2015,

'...limited intelligence...' well yes I admit to not having infinite brain-power but then again so does everyone including Einstein and Stephen Fry. Arsenal's recent record speaks for itself and my son, like lots of Gooners, believes the club should be doing better.

Perhaps he had at least one hand tied behind his back.......nowhere enough money to attract the players or pay the wages.....he had a vision, not sure anyone in football has anymore, sad to see him go.

In 22 years Arsene Wenger finished twice outside of the top four in the Premier League, he won three premier League title's two of those in double winning seasons along with the FA Cup and one whilst going the whole season unbeaten, he won seven FA Cups and seven Community Shields.

He over saw the transition from one old stadium to a brand new state of the art one at The Emirates whilst still keeping the club in the top four and in the Champions league each year on very limited funds because the club took the very sensible choice of repaying loans taken out to build the Emirates ahead of buying players.

He took the first ever London club to the Champions League final in 2006 with a team made up of both young and in experienced players and also a few older and more experienced players beating both Real Madrid and Juventus on the way.

To say " Yes it takes a real footballing genius to ensure the team gets slightly worse each year - conditionning your supporters to the point that they are happy with sixth place in the PL." is just ridiculous and shows a lack of knowledge regarding football and Arsenal F.C.

If the Premier League ever produces another team of invincibles I will be very surprised the great Manchester United sides under Fergie never did this and Man City this season have again proved what an achievement that really was to go a whole season unbeaten.

There will never be another Manager like Arsene Wenger and although his time has come to an end possibly a season to late but quite possibly because his replacement wasn't available at the end of last season I too am very sad to see him go but also very proud to have had him at my club these past 22 years.

My comments are not in any way directed personally.

I am along time Arsenal Fan, having sat with many a gooner, more often than not unfortunately experiencing the cutting edge of zero mentality, no ability to look at the bigger picture.

Unfortunatley this applies to many a football club and their fan base.

Wenger has won 3 trophies in the last 4 years, this season been in 1 final already and a semi-final on Thursday..... and will be in Europe again next season.

Spurs in contrast have just lost their Eighth semi final, and their manager is the best thing since sliced bread....

Man Utd have now qualified for the champions league by finishing in the top four I think they were 6th last season in the league, they managed to win the Europa League to qualify,  it’s taken a few years and a few managers, since Ferguson left ....

Wenger has had to deal with financial restrictions, and in the process contributed to building the magnificent Stadium they now play in, interestingly David Dien said yesterday the finance for the stadium was agreed on the back of the invincible season....

Wenger had a Vision, he had Loyalty,Integrity, intelligence .... and understood the economics of a football club and to boot was responsible for some of the best football I have ever seen in England.

Wenger will leave a legacy even if many a fan does not understand what a legacy actually means...

I agree completely, well said.

Good stuff chaps....anyway I have just watched the attack on the Man C coach as it approached Anfield for the Champions league quarter final....really quite an ordeal and I am surprised it was not made more of by the media.

Agree the media seem uninterested.

I have justed watched Klopp asking the Liverpool fans to behave tomorrow night....... unfortunately a minority of fans don’t seem to go to watch the match...

Haven’t you heard? It’s not PC to critisise LFC supporters for anything, ever.

Let’s hope the Roma manager asks the Rome police to behave during the return leg next week.

As an avid football supporter who has spent too much hard earned cash on supporting my team over the years I am again saddened this year that a team has won the Premier League because of its spending power.

Why can’t financial spending be dictated by the poorest club or at least be at a level where all clubs can compete?

When Man City played Brighton and Hove Albion at the beginning of the season they had just spent more on two wing backs than it had cost Brighton to build their entire squad and their stadium.

So yes Man City have a great side and play great football but they are entitled to because they have the money to attract the best coaches and buy the best players.

What if Pep Guardiola had to assemble a squad with the same finances as are available to Chris Houghton at Brighton wouldn’t that be a truer test of his talents as a coach.

Look at what Benitez has achieved at Newcastle he is a Champions League coach who has managed Real Madrid and he choose to go to a Championship side got them promoted and then kept them in the Premier League whilst having almost no transfer funds and having his club put up for sale. Isn’t he then a better coach than Guardiola or Jose at Man U?

Money has always played a part in football although its not the only arbiter of success. For example, look at what Ranieri achieved with Leicester or see how the teams with big parachute payments are struggling in the Championship this season.

It's nice to see lots of folk within the game acknowledge Wenger's record and contribution to the Premier League. He certainly deserves that.  Given the sourness of the last couple of seasons, it would be nice to see him leave the Gunners on a high by winning the Europa Cup.

Long term arsenal fan and a long term supporter of Wenger. Really impressed with his strict control of player wages and transfer fees, to try and keep a lid on the huge costs in football. He also moved the club to a new stadium and made arsenal a business success, look at all the other clubs and their debt levels. He will be sorely missed. In terms of replacement I think they should be looking at Benitez, who would be a good fit for the, and a good strategist

Most are inside the ground 90 mins before kick off (roughly when the away team bus arrives), having a pie in the press room, checking over their gear, taking calls from their editors, deciding which end they are going, wondering why the wi-fi doesn't work, and watching the earlier kick-off, having made the assumption that they are at the game for a sporting contest between 22 elite athletes.

A three goal lead wasn’t enough for Barca.  Will it be for LFC?

After the way they finished today, am sure Roma feels that history can repeat in the second leg!

It makes it interesting, although the way Liverpool play they are more than capable of an away goal or two, that said, Roma at home is a different proposition I’m sure

Well we already have form in Rome lol ...

I was  going to say there's nothing interests me less than football, but I decided not to say this.  I suddenly thought of my in-laws and realised it would be an untrue statement.

What a game last night! I have to say I normally am bored by the Champs League but Roma and (especially) Liverpool have really lit up this year's tournament. Mo Salah really is somthing else. Looking forward to seeing him play for Egypt in the World Cup.
