Football Season 2017/18
Posted by: Kevin-W on 11 July 2017
As requested by Steve (Paper Plane) on the 16/17 thread, here's a new one for 2017/18. All leagues/divisions welcome.
Come on you Irons!
Should have added, I'm happy with my lot finishing 8th. After coming up last season, that's a respectable consolidation.
Thanks Mike. I can add that I photographed Michael Eisner yesterday at a press conference announcing your new shirt deal and I had the feeling you are in good hands.
Yes, Chris. I was interested to watch Eisner's press conference and his explanation for the shirt sponsor to be Portsmouth Uni. I was taken by his view that the importance of the association with the sponsor and what that says about the club is more important than the money it brings in. A refreshing view to have in English football. As I heard his words my mind immediately went to the stick that Newcastle got for having the shirt sponsor Wonga.
As you say, we seem to be in good hands.
Mike, Univ I could have accepted but uni, you're bloody joking me aren't you at our age?!
One of my colleagues did Maffs at Pompey Poly......I’m sure she’ll be delighted!

I’ve just suggested to SWMBO that her Uni (roughly 12 miles N of SMS) might like to follow PP’s lead and sponsor “our heroes in red ‘n’ white”. She was unimpressed.

This Saint is choked following the game at Goodison. I listened on Radio Solent. Saints had done everything and had the game won at 1-0 at the end of the four minutes of injury time. For some reason, according to radio summariser, an extra minute was played, during which an Everton free kick was taken, allegedly from the wrong place, from which, ultimately, they levelled.
Hughes was very fair in his post match radio comments but might be censured for criticism of the officals.
But forget it, we can hold our heads up, and Swansea on Tues is all that matters now.
I watched on it BT Sport, Chris. The equaliser was a shot that took a wicked deflection, wrong footing the keeper, who I thought had an excellent game. Everton were poor. But once the disappointment of losing the extra two points fades, as it will over the next 48 hours, Saints will take a lots of positives from that performance. I think the Swans will be more nervous about Tuesday's game than your lot.
I hope Saints get relegated. Not because I’ve anything against them, but it will be so funny if Mark Hughes is responsible for the relegation of 2 teams in the SAME season. I suspect he spends too much time on the training pitch instructing his defenders how to get away with grappling with the opposing forwards.
I don’t think his comments about the ref where too bad. It wasn’t a foul and the free kick wasn’t taken from the correct spot. The challenge was about 4 yards from the corner flag, the kick was taken about 10 yards from the flag. So, 90 yards from the goal, with seven or eight players touching the ball before it hit the net. (3 of those Southampton players).
0-0 at the Etihad, a great result for Hudds.
Come on City - Its nice to finally get the Trophy.Sad that Ya Ya Toure is leaving .As he was brilliant for us especially in the Mancini - Pellagrini years.Looking forward to next season and see if we can defend it.Should be a tasty season next years.Hope you are still there Chris.Swansea - Southampton Tuesday is going to be massive for your Saints.
Thanks Ian, about Tues. Comments on local sites, and BBC after yesterday's game were mostly favourable about Hughes...
Top pic of yours, above!
'Big' Dave Merrington on Solent tells me that Manolo Gabbiadini 'sniffs out the goals like Jimmy Greaves'.
Saints almost safe...
Great result Chris.Bet your over the moon and with Southampton's miles better goal difference over Swansea its looking good for survival.....your nail biting might be over
Thank you Ian! Hopefully we will give City a guard of honour on Sunday, then play our hearts out!
As I understand it Southampton would have to lose by 10 goals against Man City, so it’s safe to say they are staying up. It’s Well deserved despite some really bad luck.
Thanks Wenger.
I think I’d prefer the Jose-style “parking of the bus” for the City game.
Comment on the Beeb website that made me smile:
John: As a die hard Southampton supporter/sufferer, Swansea 5-0 Stoke + Saints 0-5 Manchester City is not impossible.
Their is a good possibility Swansea can ensure survival by beating Stoke, Huddersfield would have to lose their last two games, bearing in mind one is against Chelsea the other Arsenal, it could well happen
Massive result for the Saints. Always said you they would pull through, Chris. But it's the lot of us fans to take the pessimistic view for our own clubs.
My twopenneth:
saints are safe
huddersfield will lose their last two games
but swansea will get beat by stoke and so will go down
Ray
Hats off to Hudds. They are safe after a 1-1 at the Bridge.
Yes, well deserved for Huddersfield, very unexpected
One Welsh club out of the PL while another comes up, not that that will be of any consolation to Swans fans.
Unfortunately most Cardiff and Swansea fans hate each other.
I went to a Cardiff v Arsenal FA Cup game a few years back, as I was walking back to the car I was mistaken for a Cardiff fan by someone who clearly supported Swansea, it was a very unpleasant situation.
I see that Saints are the victims of another bout of “Fergie Time”.
Cynical? Moi?

Losing to the 100 point champions 0-1 in that manner was no disgrace because our performance was good I thought. The overwhelming feeling for me is of immense relief leaving St Mary's this evening.
I wish Tadic had kept his shorts on though.
Until August....
