Football Season 2017/18
Posted by: Kevin-W on 11 July 2017
As requested by Steve (Paper Plane) on the 16/17 thread, here's a new one for 2017/18. All leagues/divisions welcome.
Come on you Irons!

First Big Sam, then the Moyesiah... Two in one day.
Looking forward to Kev's views on Moyes getting sacked.Shame he turned them around. Can't see Rafa leaving Newcastle though for WestHam although Shaktar Donetsk manager Paulo Fonseca has apparently been photographed leaving David Sullivan's house this week. But he's Ukrainian and doesn't have any experience of managing in the EPL.
I would like to see Moyes back at Everton with more control over the running of the club.
I don't know what the WHU and Everton boards think they are doing. Given the position of both teams when Moyes and Big Sam were appointed, and where they finished the season, I think it unarguable that both managers have been successful. If the boards think these two clubs need new managers because 'those clubs should be competing for a top-six spot' they are deluded. If it's about 'listening to the fans' who want to see prettier football, the boards are stupid as well as deluded. A finish of 8th in the toughest, most competitive league in the world is a very, very respectable position for the Toffees; and mid-table for the Hammers, having had a load of injuries and seriously flirted with relegation is also respectable. But then I'm a neutral on this and maybe Kevin and Blueknowz have a different perspective.
Oh well, another season that promised so much has ended in tedious mediocrity for my lot, Everton.
£200 million spent, two managers gone. I don't know if Moshiri can put another big chunk of cash up again for transfers. The only hope for us is to be bought up by Aramco and a hybridised clone of Ferguson and Wenger installed as the new manager. And our local rivals are in the Champions League final. Not that I'm in any way depressed about it..... but I haven't left my coffin since Sunday.
I'm not sorry to see the back of that astute, but deluded, self-publicist "Big Sam". We finished 8th after being 15th when he was appointed - but a country mile from the top six, who are in another league entirely.
The style of football being played was archaic and awful to watch - a back four with often three defensive central midfielders - and there was little in the way of service to our lone striker. Rooney might well not be the player he once was but a defensive midfielder he isn't. And still we shipped in goals!
We didn't deserve some of our wins in the final run-up on the merits of our play - the games against Southampton and Huddersfield spring to mind.
I might have to start supporting Tranmere Rovers.
Anyone looking forward to the World Cup???

Vlad
I've just seen that one of England's, EFC's and Huddersfield's finest players, Ray Wilson passed away today.

On the first: just a bit! First time for ages we're going with no real expectations, and a young, talented squad.
On second: very sad news Ray W was one of the unsung heroes of '66.
Big Sam is very good at what he does, possibly like Tony pullis, he’s great at saving teams in trouble.
But would you want him as a long term option, I can understand the fans, who pay week in week out to see their team.....answering no to that question.
Quite possibly he is a little tainted due to the England manager episode....?
Expectations of Fans is often unrealistic.... maybe that’s beginning to extend to the board as well
Everton supporters don’t want to finish in the top six, they want to finish first. (And Real Mardid to win the championis league).
With regards to big Sam. He’s done a good job at Everton. His main problem is he doesn’t get enough time to build a squad at a club, because he antagonises the fans so much. (Apart from Bolton)
Ray Wilson, one of the first attacking full backs. (I must dig out my film of the 66 FA Cup Final).
An interview from 1999.

How the life of a footballer has changed, he was a World Cup winner and earning £30 a week as player coach at Oldham.

Well, I know you wouldn't want him at the Gunners, but he's got a good record at delivering respectable results with (relatively) meagre resources.

Agree.
What is intriguing is just why the Everton fans dislike him so much? It was similar when he was at West Ham?
Is it all about his style of play?
I suspect so. When he was at WHU I recall Kevin-W and others bemoaning his playing style.
Supporters don't recognise rationality! Of course we want our team to win every time and win every competition they are eligible to enter, preferably with a team consisting of superstars and academy graduates who come from the local area.
Actually, I'm OK with LFC beating Real Madrid...…. but I'm not OK with play-it-by-the-numbers, set-piece football. Give us some creativity & roll on an exciting World Cup!
I dont think expectation of fans has become unrealistic. .the media and pundits think its better to win at any cost ( no matter how boring the football is) apart from 2 or 3 teams the prem offers mediocre football at best, as a long suffering west ham fan the only good thing about them back in the 70s and 80s was at least you got entertained , but the football they serve up today is diabolical ....you go to football to be entertained, those games are getting less and less with each passing season...i go to the park now ..its free ...the players as slighly hung ovr from the night b4 but they alway give 100%...
Don't get me wrong, some of football served up by Man City and Liverpool this season has been breath-taking, edge-of-the-seat stuff. But there aren't many sides who can realistically expect to attack like that and still win games. Also, I think there is something to be admired about the defensive side of the game. I've long had an admiration for the iron-discipline and organisational excellence of good Italian teams. The ability and skills required to snuff out the attacking intent of the opposition are under-valued, in my view. I also quite like the Italian players habit of celebrating on the pitch a piece of defensive excellence.
I'd be very happy to see England grind out 1-0 wins in all their games next month, exceeding at defence excellence, and bring home the World Cup
Maybe I'm just sad!

At the risk of being pedantic Fonseca is Potuguese. Also lack of EPL experience didn't seem to affect Pep too much!
There's a very good (i.e. agrees with my opinion but is better written) article on the "Big Sam" reign at EFC in today's Guardian at:

i newspaper has referred to Moyes and Allardyce in a headline today as "Likely lads" :-)))

Yes, I saw that too, Chris. I wonder then who is Thelma? Brady perhaps?
Not Chelsea's greatest FA Cup win ever, but a win's a win!
Well done boys.

Having suffered four years of Hippo Head's "football" at the Boleyn, that is an article with which I heartily concur.

Yes, congratulations to Chelsea, a well deserved win.
Nice for Conte, particularly if that is his last game in charge. He's brought a lot of passion to the PL. A likeable guy.
Why is Rashford in the England squad.??????????

Or Welbeck.
That's right.
Half the Enland strikers have probably only scored half a dozen goals this year, between them.
I'm in favour of playing players in form, rather than loyaly sticking with players that aren't.
The group picture of chelsea lifting the cup, reminds me of the animated picture's of wheres wally, but instead of wally, replace it with , where's john terry
