System Pics 2018

Welcome to System Pics 2018.
To start things off, here are a couple of pictures of my setup. There have been some big changes over the past year; a 300 and a 555PS, and some extra shelves to accommodate them.

Ah, interesting. During a long search for speakers, I listened to a pair of Wilson Benesch ACTs. Super hifi, yet somehow uninvolving. Then we tried adding their Torus "infrasonic generator" as they called it, though it looked like a circa 16 inch sub to me. The difference was tremendous but not in terms of ground shaking, chest thumping, night club bass.
Instead, the ACTs sounded almost the same as before, except that music had life and vitality. Rhythms and timing had evidently improved but so had the mid-range, especially voices and the top end was somehow sweeter. Remarkably similar to what you have described.
Happy listening in your delightful room.
Thank you for sharing it with us, FT

Nice, cozy room and wonderful kit sir.

I can't help but be amused by the need for an n-sub to supplement the bass response of the Ovator S800 speakers. It would seem that a system can never have too many bass drivers!
Best regards, FT

Is this simply by adding the sub without changing anything about what's passed to the 800s, or is there some kind of bandpass filtering involved?

Not the prettiest set up but waiting on a new place come June.
Main system, LP12 Ittok Krystal, SAM Alderbaran Sumiko Black Bird LO, Stagline K Flatcap 2, NAC 172, NAP 250.5, S-400.
Bedroom, Unitiqute 2, LP12 Klyde, Vincent Pho 700, PMC Tweenty 22 / Tannoy revolution signature, Manley Stingray (for some tube loving)
The LP12 on the floor is giving me a panic attack.

As long as the floor is a concrete slab and your careful of course I would think that is a great place for an LP12.

Lovely system. However, does the placement of the boxes and TTs between the speakers compromise the SQ? Another thread has covered this.

The LP12 is only there while I play around with the Aldebaran and see what it can do, but have run the LP12 on the ground playing thrash metal and not a single skip.
As for the placement of everything nothing I can do at the moment as it’s the only place I can put it, waiting for June and then can put it in a much better sounding place.
Cheers

I can't imagine tinkering with a system like that to add any filtering to the signal for the main speakers. The N-Sub has a low-pass filter, which is adjustable, between 20Hz and 250Hz, I think. I'm guessing you'd want that set pretty low with S800s.

Yes, I have just added the sub without changing anything. I had the sub to my old 5.1 system. When I changed my system the sub stayed and I think it bring something to the party
Some years ago I had DBSs with the same result...
Thanks for the clarification. I had the same thought as ChrisSU. So I was curious about the comment that the sub was just for the mids/highs.
If that effect is achieved by just adding a sub (with due care for settings etc. of course) and not tinkering with anything else, great. I may consider trying a sub at some point in the future myself.
Major change in 2017 was a couple of shelves and the mighty Titan 707s.
Plan for 2018 is a 555DR followed by a new version of NDS if released.
Oh yes... And an extension to the house as my wife wants a new living room....
Elkman, they look lovely, and so much nicer than shiny curvy boxes that so many other companies are making. One thing - try moving the power supply that sits beneath the CDS3 down a level and it will sound better. It will look more balanced too.
Hungryhalibut, just looking at the back of the system thinking that the cable dressing would prevent me doing what you suggest, but it doesn’t. I will give it a go and move the 300ps down a shelf. Cheers.
While we are at it, a Fraim glass under the CDS3 would also help. I had one under my CDS2 when it was on Isoblue. And again, it would look more balanced. I’m surprised you have the 552PS beneath the 300PS. If you swap them round the burndies won’t cross.
I will look at the power supply configuration further. Cheers

Alsolutely beautiful looking set up. I would love to hear how those Titan's sound.
Cheers Bob. They do sound rather good. I am just rejigging the power supplies as suggested by hungryhalibut...

Easy from your iPad. I speak as someone who took ages to be able to post pics. Cheers HH for showing me the way!
PS I also hate the quote replies...

Following these instructions to the letter but all I’m downloading is a little white box... what am I doing wrong?
Are you pressing the copy link icon? Once you’ve done that in Imgur, press the mountain in the reply box on the Forum and paste the link in the top box.
NB, it's the second item on the list of links you need, the DIRECT link. Not the first item on the list of links (image link).
HH - yes that’s exactly the procedure I’m following, but no result sadly
Dave, I don’t get options when I click on ‘copy link’ it just accepts my click and when I paste in the forum it pastes an URL, but no pics result..
I’ve uploaded to Imgur successfully, but link is not working. I’m offered options of public or hidden when I upload. I’ve tried both..
Use the direct link in imgur and copy. Open mountain icon and paste. Job done
Hold the front page..
