System Pics 2018

Welcome to System Pics 2018.
To start things off, here are a couple of pictures of my setup. There have been some big changes over the past year; a 300 and a 555PS, and some extra shelves to accommodate them.
Hi Jonners, I concealed all the boxes behind the wall, just need to get the boxes on a more solid base to be honest. but this is what it looks like at the mo.

Those Sopra's look great in your room. I had these on loan and they didn't look good in our room according to my wife. The future certainly wasn't Orange
Ultimately the sound wasn't for me but glad that you like them.
Wow, just wow! That orange looks amazing in that space, lovely system
No wonder they didn't sound right: orange and green rug. Helloooooo!
LOL. Black more your colour? Also had these on loan.
If those are jet blacks you can just about get away with it but in orange you definitely need shades!
Very nearly went with the Spendor D9's. I thought that they had a Lovely honest sound.

So, what did the Titans 606 bring to the equation that the others did not?

Looks like a lot of the potential of the system is lost by a construction in the closet. A pity when one spends serious money on a system.

I simply think that Naim is a great piece of engineering to be enjoyed and admired! It offends me when people just call them black boxes. Buy something else for heavens sake!

I simply think that Naim black boxes on a nice piece of Fraim is quite pleasing from a design / industrial design perspective.

Hi Tony
I'm probably not great with describing sound but will give my thoughts/reasons.
Firstly and most importantly my wife preferred the look of the 606's . I tried a number of different speakers and for me the 606's worked best with my room. The Focals seemed to have a lot going on and were very exciting and I thought very seriously about ordering the Sopra 2's in black as I felt they were so much better than the Kanta's but after few days of listening to them I began to wonder if I could actually live with them long term. Mind you when they were sent back and replaced with my own Spendor D7's I realised that my D7's felt lacking and could be bettered but I would have to spend at least double what the D7's cost as they really are a great speaker. I did consider going down the NAP 300 route but decided to change the speakers first. Most of the speakers I tried maybe struggled with my room acoustics with the hard floor and my listening position being close/against the rear wall doesn't help. If I had gone down the NAP 300 route first then the outcome with the speaker choice may possibly have been different but I'm very happy with the result I have. I've just ordered a larger rug which I believe will possibly help with the acoustics. (and no its not another green one as I have now reached the age of beige LOL) For me the 606's just sound more together and more musical than the others that I tried and I just love the sound of the controlled Isobarik base. The final choice came down to the Spendor D9's and the 606's. Although I loved the midrange of the D9's I felt that they were just a bit too laid back for me and weren't as musical as the 606's. With them being rear ported they also need to be a bit further out into the room than the 606's which wasn't ideal. I also tried most of the PMC range but they just didn't turn me on
Cheers

Hailing originally from Rochdale I have clear memories of Todmorden as a real working mill town. I was quite staggered when I visited it last year for the first time in over 40 years. Gentrification doesn’t come close! I’m sure it’s preferable to industrial decay and unemployment, but I do wonder where all the real people went. It’s very cutesy, but somehow unreal.
I wonder what real people are? Folk with clogs and whippets? Calling Todmorden cutesy is a bit odd for someone living in Cornwall, which seems to be full of holidaymakers, second homers and retirees, with hardly any employment. Almost an epitome of cutesy Todmorden by comparison seems far more of a place where stuff actually happens. I know where I’d rather live.

I first visited Tod about 15 or so years ago, having got together with my West Yorkshire-living late wife in 2001. I’d say that then it was a town that hadn’t started to recover from the collapse of the mill industry, it was very run-down and seemed to have a lot of deprivation. Over the last 5-8 years it seems to have really changed (I moved from London to 8 miles away from Tod in 2008), lots of nice eateries, the Totally Locally movement leaving herbs and veg for the community, interesting quirky shops and less poverty (at least to the eye, can’t say for sure).

Thank you for sharing, Doug. Also pleased to know that your lady also enjoys and appreciates displaying Naim's engineering prowess in its full glory. Lucky man!

Congratulations........Great picture......I do hope SWMBO lets you pull the Sopra’s out a little, they are terrific speakers but to get the best out of them they do need more space

Richard, can one still get one of those posters? Shame that Naim doesnt resurrect the old advertising style again.

Many times, which is how I know what it’s like.

Depends on the type of green and in what proportions it's used. Designer Paul Smith uses orange and green in one of his designs of an Anglepoise lamp and it looks stunning.

Ah yes, we visited there as well - Little Venice of the North! Again, good to see it survive the decimation of all its industry and employment, but I do wonder how sustainable what it has to offer will be in the long run.

Have you always been this touchy? Whilst respecting your right to an opinion, given where you live, and taking a wild guess you’ve never lived in either the industrial North or Cornwall (which consists of a lot more than St Ives, Rock or Padstein), you might consider winding your neck in.

Hi Aaron, that's a nifty piece of engineering and the lack of dusting potential appeals to me! Do your remotes work ok through the panelling? AS has already been commented you will be sacrificing some performance through the choice of shelving, perhaps think about doubling up on the shelves to ensure adequate dampening.
My only suggestion if you're drawn to the minimalist approach would be to replace the speakers with a pair of Wilson Tune Tots. Big money, big sound but unfussy about placement and I'd get a real kick out of producing such a big sound from a tiny pair of speakers!
