Made Up Mind

Tedeschi Trucks Band -  Made Up Mind,

As a very long-term fan of The Dan, I have no idea how this passed me by for so long. A friend recently introduced me to it. Fabulous.

Eleven tracks of whack to borrow an album title of the dear departed Walter Becker. And those eleven tracks are beautifully chosen and culled from a '93/94 USA tour. Being a pre-2,000 creation, the lo-fi brigade haven't got at it and killed it in mastering. Hallelujah!

Deliciously dynamic, with sublime bass quality. Snare drums truly thwack. Musicianship is of course of peerless quality throughout.

You gotta love the boys for having a lark with the R.Twerk too.

John.

Martin Nonstatic - Ligand Remixes (not "24 bit studio master" as it would appear from the pic)

One of my favourite labels (Ultimae) released this yesterday. It has some serious bass on it. I am listening at what I would call moderate volume (its not loud enough to drown out the tumble dryer) and I can feel the bass hitting me in the head! Good illustration of the Naim dynamics - this is what I spent all that money on a 272 and a 250 for! Oh yes!

Playing one Eddi Reader led to another.

News of his new remixed album arrived in my inbox this morning from Ultimae/bandcamp, I have the original album and after your good words I will probably spring for this remix. Thanks!

(2008)

Il Divino Fransesco da Milano

Well recorded on one of my favourite classical music labels, Naïve. This is wonderful early music to chill out to (much needed), Hopkinson Smith doing superb things with various lutes sometimes to the feint background accompaniment of birdsong around the rural recording studio where the album was made.

Lovely ensemble playing by these three talented musicians - their instruments blending beautifully together. Edgar Meyer's double bass delivers growling menace or can sound a lot like a cello. A quality job on the Sugar Hill label.

My thanks to Radio Paradise for the introduction to this fine album.

(2017)

Mad Dog

Lovely music penned by a few of the foremost English lutenists and writers of the early Elizabethan age (Dowland and Johnson at the forefront) . As ever Hopkinson Smith plays these works superbly and adds a certain something here and there to fill in missing gaps from the historical music archives.
