On the eve of a new year, it's time for a new thread.
Last year's thread can be found here:
Pcd posted:Mary Black here as well very enjoyable.
My favourite Mary album, I go on about it a lot here, but I think her version of Jimmy McCarthy’s Bright Blue Rose is sublime, and there is one short line that Declan Sinnott plays on it that is one of the perfect examples of a guitarist enhancing the emotion of the lyric by understated perfection. Enjoy!
The Kinks - Muswell Hillbillies.

The Kinks - Muswell Hillbillies.
Quiz question - Which North London suburb launched the career of two great singer-songwriters and two great guitarists? The Kinks started in Muswell Hill so we get Ray Davies and Dave Davies, and Fairport Convention started in Simon Nicol’s parents’ house called Fairport in Muswell Hill, so Richard Thompson as the singer-songwriter and guitarist. (I thimk Sandy joined Fairport after they’d left Muswell Hill.)
Last one for the evening
The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Further Out ( Miro Reflections ).

Mid-‘80s album, so a few songs have a bit of that era’s production, but it doesn’t detract from a great Irish folk sound. Mary’s in fine voice, the songs are excellent, quite a few Jimmy McCarthy numbers which is a promise of musical quality, and the musicians include the great Declan Sinnott on guitar/harmony vocals and Donal Lunny, Irish folk-rock royalty. Mary is one of the finest Irish singers of any genre, her version of the haunting Sydney Carter song Crow on the Cradle on this album is the most chilling I have ever heard.
Every year I’m dragged to a charity carol service (very good cause, homelessness) which I tolerate more than enjoy. This year it promises to be more enjoyable I think.

Elvis Costello and the Attractions - Armed Forces - Original U.K. vinyl
Went to get a Sandy Denny album to follow Mary Black, but got this instead. My favourite album at school, and still a fave, given the recent political climate songs from this play in my head. Classic early Costello, cynical angry lyrics with upbeat tunes, the Attactions were a serious band by this time, wonderful album.
He mentions laryngitis early in this set and indeed his voice does seem restrained at times but it’s a great set and an enjoyable listen.

Richard and Linda Thompson - I want to see the bright lights tonight - early’80s vinyl
A very bleak album, R Thompson’s usual brilliant lyrics and guitar work, Linda’s pure voice adds power and beauty to the lyrics, it’s one of those albums where the dark lyrics truly illuminate the human condition and yet raise you up. The penultimate song, End of the Rainbow has only dark bleakness, yet it’s followed by the Great Valerio, which probably offers hope for humanity.
The Beatles - Abbey Road - Late ‘70s vinyl
My favourite Fabs album, and a Desert Island Disc for me. After two favourite cynical/desperate albums tonight, one of the most joyous I own, wonderful songs, and the boys were seriously good musicians.
I keep, thinking I should pick up a first press, the recent upgrade to a 52 Supercap shows me I can hear more, but in this case I don’t care, this gives me so much joy I’ll stay with this pressing.
The Divine Miss M, hi res
Davitt Moroney - Bach: The art of fugue
Pre-listening for tonight...

Now that’s a cover that’d be hard to miss on the Nova.
Interestingly, if I enlarge it on my iPhone so that the coloured circle fills the whole screen, it appears to take on three dimensional qualities.

Playing this yet again, for which I make no apologies, as it may well be album of the year, Chez Dave.
If you haven't yet heard this, you are seriously missing out on a beautiful album .......... it's on Tidal, so go on, treat yourself.
“Set aside all romantic notions about unfinished and unreleased albums; most scrapped albums are shelved because they’re not very good. Certainly that’s the case with ‘Original Memphis Recordings’.........”
So begins the Rovi review of this Primal Scream release! Whilst I find the album reasonably entertaining (certainly compared to the original release which was pretty c**p), the reviewer does make some quite valid observations. Yet another example of ‘one man’s meat.....’
Amy MacDonald - Under Stars
There are some great tunes on this one.
From before - requires some focused listening....
Great music, should have explored it much earlier. I Ike the early Genesis more than the later more poppy Genesis...

I am listening to it at the moment, I enjoy 'Sorni Nai' most. There is a similar haunting thread runs through his music, which in the right mood, I really enjoy.
What are your own thoughts?
Playing on Compact Disc on Naxos - Really nice Vivaldi Cello Concerto to lift the Monday Morning work blues
King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King - CD
Listening to this for the first time in 6 months. I am particularly taken by the woodwind. What is that very deep sound on track 3 - is it vibes? The album has some very beautiful music.

Early Genesis music makes heavy demands on your HiFi and it’s setup. Well that was my experience, happily now resolved.
Bert, I’m sure it’s an amazing experience on your ND555.

Playing on Compact Disc - Just brilliant from Vanessa Frenandez
