This always brings back the memory of the time when this album was released one of the staff made a hash cake and cut portions to give away to customers everytime one bought a copy. Never had so many requests for a recipe before.

Beautiful sounding London/Decca mono from 1957.

Ansermet's cool elegant touches everywhere.

Thoughtful and sensitive there is no dramatic angst and sometimes just feel turgid and sat on. Easy on ears and beautiful rendering without any agonising inner emotional struggle.

I'd still take Mravinsky/Leningrad set ( either mono or stereo version ) even its lesser fidelity.

Tchaikovsky Symphony 6: Solti/CSO '76 rec.

Kenneth Wilkinson engineered Solti/CSO LP is out of this world.

Gravitas and drama in abundance. Solti builds excitement slowly to a good effect. It’s still perhaps too polished for my taste but what a dynamics and large sound stage that fills the room like a tidal wave. Yet it’s much more human than many. Heart attack inducing big bang on the back end of the 1st movement followed by nimble CSO musicians. What a confidence and bold strokes I’ve never heard from today’s CSO. Chicago Brass at their best and this record shows their tone very well.

So what's missing from Mravinsky's?

Grit and sarcastic bent. ( especially for the 2nd movement )

Richard and Linda Thompson - I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight

I noticed someone posted this earlier this week. Then I was reminded of it last night when a cover of Down Where the Drunkards Roll was played on BBC Radio 2 folk programme. This must be the first time I've played it since I've been at this address, so more than fifteen years. I'd forgotten how good it is. I shall have to play more Richard Thompson.

  Primal Scream - Echo Dek.

Extremely chilled out dub from The Scream, based on the "Vanishing Point" album.

There's so much material out there in the form of dubs and re-mixes, and this is certainly one of the best offerings.

One for all "late at night", "time for bed"  Primal Scream fans.

Ian Siegal - All The Rage.

I posted this a few days back, and now I've found the time for a proper listen, and this is an absolute belter from Ian, who is arguably

the finest blues singer / guitarist in the UK today.

As I mentioned, Nugene Records currently have a sale on, until the 10th., and this is available at less than five squid, with some of

Ian's other albums at even less ............. so get yersel ower there, an' bag sum bargins, ken.
