On the eve of a new year, it's time for a new thread.
Last year's thread can be found here:
I didn't know this album before now, I must admit, but it's the best Aretha record I've ever heard. The Queen of Soul at her jazziest. On vinyl.
AllMusic review here:
One of her most overlooked '60s albums, on which she presented some of her jazziest material, despite the title. None of these cuts were significant hits, and none were Aretha originals; she displayed her characteristically eclectic taste in the choice of cover material, handling compositions by Percy Mayfield, Sam Cooke, Smokey Robinson, and, at the most pop-oriented end of her spectrum, John Hartford's "Gentle on My Mind" and Bob Lind's "Elusive Butterfly." Her vocals are consistently passionate and first-rate, though, as is the musicianship; besides contributions from the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, session players include respected jazzmen Kenny Burrell, Ron Carter, Grady Tate, David Newman, and Joe Zawinul.
Ruthie Foster - The Phenomenal Ruthie Foster
What an incredible voice, recently posted on here by Ewen if memory serves. Some great songs too.
Phenomenal indeed.
Now Playing.........
Yoshiko Kishino - Face
Streaming on TIDAL........ a mention above from BERT SCHURINK above prompted me to give one of Yoshiko's albums out for a spin. .....and it is sounding mighty fine!
It's Snowing On My Piano - one I only play at Christmas.
John Lennon - Anthology
I've just watched the Above Us Only Sky video and it seemed appropriate to play the Ascot disc from this set.
(1993)
Getting off the mark quickly with some evocative medieval carols (mostly from the 15th century) sung by the wonderful Oxford Camerata.
John Coltrane - Both directions at once: the lost tapes
Great jazz.
- Bass – Jimmy Garrison
- Drums – Elvin Jones
- Piano – McCoy Tyner
- Tenor Saxophone, Soprano Saxophone – John Coltrane
John Lennon - Some Time in New York City
Staying with John Lennon. Reading the sleeve notes I wonder whatever happened to my Elephant's Memory album...
Vinyl released 1977 - A brilliant debut album from Mr Dynamite. 8)
Thought this was new, but had already this music on the hdd, the burden of a large collection....
Had again a run on this, very nice...
Stayed in the same artist, nice melodic playing...
Triggered be my deal at eclassical...
(1964)
All Summer Long
One of the first albums that I ever bought with pocket money, so it's nice to drag out this lovely hi-res version of the Beach Boys on this cold winter's night and enjoy some old memories.
Following AlanP's recommendation, I ordered this yesterday evening and have just unwrapped it and popped it in the CD player. I like what I'm hearing.
Playing on Vinyl - Tangerine Dream getting very aquatic from 1986.

glad you're enjoying it Mike,
Vinyl released 1984 - For Nancy Wilson RIP
I'm seeing black midi again next Wed in Saarf London. A mainly physical assault, but like this tune gives you time to think. The band are 18/19 years old, with astonishing potential.
RIP Nancy. Two classic mono albums on one CD, good sound too. There's a great cover of Bobbie's "Ode To Billie Joe" on here.
Sean Rowe - Madman
Belter!
