On the eve of a new year, it's time for a new thread.
Last year's thread can be found here:
Some of the blues albums I have been playing the last few days.
Howard Shore
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - 24/44.1
Edward
My first real run of this one, let’s see...
I know where your coming with Eoink with the Rhythm lines between Page and Jones. For me No Quarter from the Song Remains the Same is a fine illustration.Wow what a Page solo and they really stretch out on that one.Wicked.
I know where your coming from with Zep and how they have been in your life for the last 40 years. When I was 8 in 1973 I used to go to Kingston on Thames to see an older Sister and her boyfriend every Saturday with my parents and used to enjoy going threw their record collection and always remember hearing the Immigrant Song for the first time and thinking WTF is this,it sounded like a wall of noise.Like a sonic sledgehammer. Blew me away.Funny I have got their copy years later and its on an Atlantic first pressing and the center label is red and purple. Its on 180 g vinyl or near. Also have a later copy and it doesn't sound as good as the original.

...and not forgetting that the theme tune to TOTP would have influenced very many youngsters towards the band (well, at least those who knew what it was)
2006 - Tidal...

Led Zeppelin, Houses of the Holy, WAV rip from SHM CD
Zep experimenting after the amazing 1st 4 albums, playing with non-rock forms, and they did it so well. Fun from start to finish.

I remember waiting for the release of that album with great anticipation, not least because the rumours were that Zep were going to experiment. Then a friend and I noticed that a sample of it was to be played on the Old Grey Whistle Test. We both settled down to watch the programme with Bob Harris introducing the new album in his quiet, understated style........and then he played No Quarter. Wow. We were enthralled.
Led Zeppelin I, WAV rip from SHM CD
MDS mentioned the 1st 2 Zep albums as their best, it’s so hard to choose between their masterworks. I was 4 when this came out, I first heard it a decade later, even now Bonzo’s drumming on the opening lines still sounds like he is defining the template for rock drumming, and the whole band is on fire. JPJ and Bonham lay down blues grooves, but also play experimental sounding lines, Page and Plant duet on guitar and voice, Percy wails, croons, Page does blues and jazz lines, and goes freaky, they were a new band, but they sound like they’d been together for ever. Dazed and Confused is playing now, had to stop typing several times because they drag me in to listen.

I agree, Eoink, though I was a teenager when it was released. I was particularly stunned by You Shook Me where in the middle everything slows down and Plant sings in complement to Page's guitar solo. That style was unheard of at the time and to do it on debut album showed immense confidence in their own talent and willingness to mark out their own style. I've been an avid Zep fan every since
A nice album with the beauties - well played...
My first album of Hanna - bought it as part of the MPS deal on Qobuz, sounds good....
That Bert Schurink would do a workout to this if he hears it
2 x LP [etching on side 4] + CD set Sony Music 2018 : )
Ry Cooder - Ry Cooder
Peggy Lee - Fever, The Best Of .... a 24 track compilation on Capitol which I sourced after reading of its recommended sound quality.Splendid stuff
Alan
Lynyrd Skynyrd - One More From The Road, vinyl.
As played by GraemeH earlier, the fantastic Skynyrd live. I’ve just played the second disc, finishing with Freebird. The Southern-rock template, 2 guitarists, top class singer, Skynyrd had great songs, this album rocks hard, and is superb on all levels.
Thin Lizzy - Black Rose, original vinyl.(I think bought from the Finchley Woolworths record rack.)
Follwoing the Skynyrd double guitar, Scott Gorham and Gary Moore lead on this, this is a very fine album. Phil Lynott sings very well, the two leads drive the fine songs. I love the title track, themes from Irish folk/classic songs with lyrics referencing pretty much every Irish cultural figure in an amusing style, great tune, great fun. Other songs are harder hitting, alcoholism in Give It Up.
Played earlier today........
Paul Motian - I Have The Room Above Her
Anoaur Brahem - The Astounding Eyes of Rita
Tord Gustavsen - Restored, Returned
Jon Balke - Siwan
Some music on the Road trip to Portland, Oregon. Will be seeing Bill Frisell & Thomas Morgan on tomorrow Evening!
