What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XIV)

On the eve of a new year, it's time for a new thread.
Last year's thread can be found here:

I'm thoroughly enjoying this band right now. This is my second album of theirs and cannot stop playing it. It's a bit like Gong without lyrics. Some great music though.
Delighted that you are enjoying them Clive, I've got pretty much all their stuff from way back in the day when you could only get it on cassette. I still prefer their early material but that does not mean their more recent albums are poor in any way at all. Perhaps your best way to 'discover' them might be to work your way forward in the way you seem to be doing.
Enjoy!

Blade Runner 2049 Soundtrack
Heard this and liked the instrumental bits a lot when I watched the film the other day, so I bought the soundtrack. I think the Elvis and Frank songs on it are a bit out of place so I have made a playlist with them absent. Not that keen on the other song (last one on the record), which is a bit of an 80s power ballad, so that's not on the playlist either. Apart from that its all fun fun fun.
This record has some serious bass, and I don't think I have heard the like before. I was listening to it today at work through my portable gear (hugo 1 + shure 846 earphones) and the shure earphones are supposed to be good at bass, and they really are! I could feel my ears vibrating!
Regarding the film, I think its top drawer. Having said this, I watched it in 2 parts over 2 evenings, stopping about 1 3/4 hours in. At the point I stopped I would have said its a bit slow and boring. After watching the end, I think its great. 2049 is much better than the first Blade Runner IMHO. I thought the first one was more style than substance and 2049 has substance as well as style. I reckon it will be a slow burner like Barry Lyndon was - it might take 30 years before its get the status it deserves.
Playing at the moment
Sammy Davis Jr - At The Coconut Grove songs and a routine from the all round entertainer, certainly of its time but enjoyable nevertheless

Darren,
I think you’re underestimating people here. They may not share your taste in music but some could probably tell you which Technics model you own just looking at its knob!

Hi Tony,
I didn’t doubt it, the placement of the tape was a carrot rather than a coincidence ????.
A year or two shy of his bossa nova success, Stan Getz set his mind to improvising against a backdrop of darkish yet scintillating string charts. The orchestral muscle was provided by arranger Eddie Sauter; the heady and fluid horn lines, of course, came from Getz.

I too am surprised you missed Jimmy Ried.
The man in your avtar used to play him a lot, sometimes from original 7inch singles. that's how I became aware of Jimmy Ried. He sometimes gets criticised for all his songs being similar but you can level that at a lot of the blues singers from the30s/40s/50s.

Most of my blues from this period was provided by ACE reissues, particularly of the Excello catalogue, I have over 100 ACE CDs and only one Jimmy Reed track on them! But I can see much of the Excello sound in these Jimmy Reed tracks
This album is on Tidal, any recommendations as to where to go back catalogue wise. This one is a bit pricey at £34.

Jimmy Reed - Five Classic Albums + Singles.
This 4 CD set is really all the Jimmy Reed you'll ever need.
Seriously though, it's from the good folks at Real Gone Music, who have reissued tons of classic blues albums.
Generally, they've all been re-mastered, and up to now, on the ones I've bought, the re-mastering actually does add to the SQ.
Cheap as chips over on The River.
Thanks Dave, but I generally try to avoid EU grey CD versions. Jimmy himself long gone but there could be some children or grandchildren who should be benefiting.
I’ll explore further on Tidal as see where that takes me

These are the ones to start off with. You may have a bit of diifficulty getting the 12 String Guitar Blues set as it is very rare but it is a great acoustic album.
You also need to listen to Slim Harpo - Sings Raining in my Heart and also try some Lightnin' Slim- Rooster Blues which was Excello records first full length album even though it was a comp made up of entirely singles.
